    Default Networking Issues and Queries

    Hi,

    I have a software unlocked (using AppTapp, PACAY, anySIM) iphone (came out of the box with fw v1.0.2). I'm using it here in New Delhi, India with Airtel's service.

    I have some queries about some of the networking capabilities of the iphone.

    I have a home wifi connection with a password (WPA security), and it works perfectly on the iphone.

    But at my workplace, I have 2 kinds of wifi network connections, one for employees and one for guests. The one for employees is WEP secured, and requires entering a hex key. Now I'm unable to find where to enter the hex key for a network. Seems like the method given here doesn't work any more.

    The network for guests is open, and I seem to be able to connect to it alright with my iphone. But what is supposed to happen is that once you try to open a site, an authentication screen is supposed to come up, where you can enter a username and password. But what is happening is that safari gives the "cannot find server" error message.

    So what can I do to connect to my workplace wifi? I suppose the guest network is the best bet, because employees need to login using Cisco VPN client if they're connected via wifi.

    Talking about VPN, my laptop came with the Cisco VPN client installed and configured. Can I get the VPN settings from that to use with my iphone? Please help.

    Regarding EDGE, my service provider here doesn't have EDGE, but they have GPRS. The GPRS settings they gave me were:

    APN: airtelfun.com
    Username: blank
    Password: blank
    IP Address: 100.001.200.099

    Now, where am I supposed to enter this IP Address? Entering just the APN doesn't seem to help.

    Any suggestions/solutions about any of the above will be highly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Vineet

    Default

    Update on this.

    Got my workplace wifi to work using the guest network. Had to manually put in DNS server as 208.67.222.222, and voila! Started working like a charm.

    Still no EDGE though.

    Called up the helpline of my service provider again,...these are the settings they gave:

    APN: airtelfun.com
    Username: blank
    Password: blank

    PPTP (?)
    Server: airtelfun.com
    Account: 100.1.200.99
    Password: blank

    Now where am I supposed to put in these PPTP settings? I tried putting them in the VPN settings....but I don't see how that would work (it didn't).

    I also tried putting a proxy.pac file with this entry:

    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    {
    if (isInNet(myIpAddress(), "100.0.0.0", "255.0.0.0"))
    return "PROXY 100.1.200.99:8080";
    else
    return "DIRECT";
    }

    And then edited my preferences.plist file and uploaded to the iphone.

    A strange thing which happens is after restarting the phone, the APN in the EDGE settings gets changed to 100.1.200.99...all by itself....

    Any ideas on how to get this activated???
