    Default Network name is UMA

Im going crazy trying to figure this out... I hope somebody knows....

I have an iphone from softbank in Japan and the network name is "SoftBank".... after taking it to the states for a week I came back and turned it on and it now displays "UMA" in the top left corner where the network name is. Ive tried restoring, in both of the special "recovery" modes (the one with the picture and the one with the blank screen) but everytime i load it back up it still says UMA. I have even tried downgrading to 2.2 and putting it back to 2.2.1 but the whole time it still says UMA. Going to the network selection page actually lists "softbank" (the one I should be connecting to) and "jp docomo" (which I cant connect to). there isnt even an UMA option there, but when I select the softbank option it puts the tick there and looks like it connected ok, but still always just says "UMA".

does anybody have any idea or anything else I can try?

I had the same when I took my phone to the states (german t-mobile), network name there was UMA (see here: Generic Access Network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). It was actually booked into T-Mobile US, as my bill showed :-) When booked into AT&T, it showed AT&T as expected. Don't know why this happened though...

Yes, it showed T-Mobile as soon as I turned it on again in Germany...don't think you'll be charged for roaming :-)
