I am very confused at this point.

Does your phone boot up ? What exactly is the state of the phone right now ?

So the firmware on your phone now is 4.2.1 ?
And that was stock or custom that you restored to the phone ?
    Do you need unlock ?
Don't say all things worked fine but got stuck ..... It is very confusing and contradicting
    im sorry for that..

my phone sometimes boots up to recovery mode, but sometimes i get black or white screen of death then it just turns off. sometimes i get the apple logo but it just stays there.

my phone is on 4.2.1 stock fimware. i downloaded it from itunes.

    i rely on unlock

thank you very much for the effort of helping me..

    - how do you know it's in recovery mode ?
    - when you said sometimes, does that mean some other times it will boot up normally without any problem ?
    - did you jailbreak this device yet ?

Tell me what is the baseband on the phone right now. It's in settings, about, scroll down and tell me the modem firmware.

== i know its in recovery coz i see the itunes logo (new one, blue color) with the usb cable..

== sometimes it boots to recovery sometimes i just get a blank screen without the apple logo followed by white screen

== after i restored it to 4.2.1, i jailbroke it. but i got stuck at the "downloading jailbreak data". after that, i switched it off. then i cant get it to boot normally( get to the emergency screen)

Tell me what is the baseband on the phone right now. It's in settings, about, scroll down and tell me the modem firmware.
== i cannot get to the home screen. all i know its 4.2.1 on my phone right now. i restore it to stock firmware, my baseband should be upgraded too right?

your BASEBAND should be 05.15.04 if all you did was restore using stock firmware from Apple.

Why didn't you answer my other questions ? Trying to help you but you are not helping me with information i need. sigh ....

    - did you attempt to jailbreak it ? if so, what did you use ? did you at any point allow the jailbreak to update the baseband to 06.15.00 ?

    - what is showing on the iphone screen right now ?. is it a cable + cd picture with "slide for emergency" on the screen ?

YOU must answer my question completely and describe exactly what you did in order for anyone to help you.

== all i did was the usual jailbreak from redsn0w 0.9.6b6, tick the install cydia, enable wallpaper background and battery percentage, thats it...

nope, when i turn it on, its apple logo screen then followed by a white screen then it turns off.

    - im very sorry.

in redsn0w 0.9.6b6, there is a box to check "update using ipad baseband" if you did not check that then you baseband is still 05.14.04 which is the default baseband for stock firmware 4.2.1.

At this point, put phone in DFU mode and restore with stock firmware. Let see if you can do that.

Think you have this slightly confused. Redsn0w will never restore the actual OS, only iTunes (and the opensource iRestore) can currently do this.

One of the things that redsn0w can do is to update the baseband of your phone to version 6.15 (which ships ONLY with the iPad 4.2.1 IPSW). This procedure will not do anything to the actual OS your iPhone is running, it just changes the baseband (which is a separate chip on the phone, for running the mobile phone functions). This is what dtube is talking about.

What dtube didn't mention was that TinyUmbrella can often show you the current baseband version - even when you are stuck in recovery mode (not DFU mode though)

Stock FW needs normal DFU mode + SHSH (no SHSH required on a 3G for iOS 3.1.3 and lower)

Pwned IPSW 4.1 and higher needs limera1n pwned DFU mode + SHSH

Pwned IPSW lower than 4.1 need pwnage2 exploit pwned DFU (no SHSH required on a 3G iPhone)

    Thanks Olethros,
I forgot all about that (tinyumbrella) :-).

    @markeeinsik,
normal DFU mode and pwned DFU mode are 2 different things.
Stock firmware == firmware that you download from APPLE (i gave you link in previous post)
Custom firmware (a.k.a pwned ipsw) == firmware that you created by using pwnagetool

In your case, what i meant is use normal DFU mode and firmware from Apple. You must use itunes to restore firmware.

Itunes is the only thing you can use to restore firmware to the device.
REdsn0w and pwnagetool are tool to jailbreak the device and NOT for restoring firmware

= so this will not affect the firmware i will restore? so i can restore it back to 4.0.2 even if my baseband is 5.14.04?

= im a little confused. my last working ios was 4.0.2 with a bb of 5.13.04, when i updated my ios to 4.2.1 my baseband should be 5.15.04 right? or do i need to update it to 6.15 for me to be able to restore to ipad 4.2.1? since i cannot restore to stock 4.2.1 fw and i need a custom 4.2.1 fw.

= lets just say that im on 5.15.04, will i be able to revert back to 5.13.04?

What dtube didn't mention was that TinyUmbrella can often show you the current baseband version - even when you are stuck in recovery mode (not DFU mode though)

= when i plug my iphone on recovery mode. tinyumbrella shows this "?1114116" at the upper left corner and there are no data shown on the general area. does this mean tinyumbrella did not recognized my phone? but when i opened itunes, it recognizes my phone.

Stock FW needs normal DFU mode + SHSH (no SHSH required on a 3G for iOS 3.1.3 and lower)

= so i cant use normal DFU mode to restore to 4.2.1 since i dont have my shsh saved?

Pwned IPSW 4.1 and higher needs limera1n pwned DFU mode + SHSH

= you mentioned limera1n, do i need to download his software?

Pwned IPSW lower than 4.1 need pwnage2 exploit pwned DFU (no SHSH required on a 3G iPhone)
thanks for your time in answering my query
