    Default Can Safari use WAP APN?

    Dear all,

    as my mobile provider is offering a nice data package (30MB download per month for 3.5 Euro flat fee per month) but only if the user goes through their WAP APN (and not through their internet APN) I would like to ask if Safari can use WAP APN?

    I did try to change the APN from internet.vodafone.gr to wap.vodafone.gr and launch Safari to hit something and I get "Server Not Found" error.

    Any clues?

    Thanx
    iPhone 4.0, Vodafone Greece.

    there is a way to do it. you need to ssh into your phone and add a proxy.

    So, many providers invoke an additional fee when going through an internet server (for laptop, general internet use) vs a wap server, which is meant for mobile internet pages, and on the iPhone, up until now, you could not access EDGE through a wap server, because there is no place to enter the IP address/proxy address.

    Here`s the HOWTO: (using 205.151.11.11 as the IP address, which would need to be changed to your IP, wap.fido.ca as the apn, fido as the user and fido as the pass, all of which would have to be selectable and inputted to be able to put your server`s IP or proxy address there instead. I have put all those user selectable texts in red.

    make a new text file named proxy.pac with the following text:

    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    {
    if (isInNet(myIpAddress(), "10.0.0.0", "255.0.0.0"))
    return "PROXY 205.151.11.11:8080";
    else
    return "DIRECT";
    }

    and save it to: /private/var/root on your iPhone.

    Next, open up preferences.plist from /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

    and add the following text (in red) to preferences.plist where you see ip1 (it is towards the middle of the document:

    <dict>
    <key>Interface</key>
    <dict>
    <key>DeviceName</key>
    <string>ip1</string>
    <key>Hardware</key>
    <string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>
    <key>Type</key>
    <string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>
    </dict>

    <key>Proxies</key>
    <dict>
    <key>ProxyAutoConfigEnable</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>ProxyAutoConfigURLString</key>
    <string>file:///private/var/root/proxy.pac</string>
    </dict><key>com.apple.CommCenter</key>
    <dict>
    <key>AllowNetworkAccess</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>Available</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>Setup</key>
    <dict>
    <key>apn</key>
    <string>wap.fido.ca</string>
    <key>password</key>
    <string>fido</string>
    <key>username</key>
    <string>fido</string>
    </dict>

    <key>Version</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    </dict>
    </dict>

    Save, and reboot the phone!

    WAP is a different protocol and a different markup language - that is why some phones have a WAP browser. Safari is not a WAP browser.

    WAP is some kind of baby browser like S.J used to call it.

    Safari on iPhone is a real browser, well it is missing a lot of things like flash, Java, embedded video support etc etc..., but it shows the page exactly the same way as a computer browser.
