if true (haven't upgraded to 1.1.3 yet), then its not weird at all; even if you have no sim inserted, the phone will camp on a carrier for emergency calls only (which carrier depends on relative signal strength of each), in which case, you can use the cellid of said carrier for locating yourself using GM of any other locating application ....

    Works ONLY for 1.1.3.

    1. Download Navizon through Installer
    2. Use Navizon to locate you.
    3. Once Navizon opens up Google Maps and locates you, close Navizon.
    4. Start Google Maps.
    5. Try Locate now. It should work.
    6. To clean up, uninstall Navizon.

NOTE: Hybrid and Traffic still not working.
mine works great with no nee of 3rd partty app ... even habrid aand traffic work

Its all working on mine, even Hybrid. Although, the Hybrid just started to work, weird, but I'm not complaining. I updated last night.

Hybrid and traffic view are working for me, but locate is not. I went from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3. I tried the Navizon and locateme trick to get it working, but neither of those work either. However googlemaps locate does work if you take out the sim.

Thumbs up [1.1.3][Fix] Google Maps Hybrid View!

EDIT: This works fine but your PC will not be able to recognize your iPhone anymore meaning iTunes cant detect it and you cant charge it. So, steer clear of this method.

Ok. This is the story. Since locate, hybrid and traffic are all not working for me, I decided to do some research. Soon, I found this lockdownd file that supposedly fixes all of that. Now, I have already read a post here that say that when you change the lockdownd file, you will get to the activate screen if you are not using a legal sim. I took my chances and uploaded the new lockdownd file and rebooted. It went straight to springboard but I had No Service, for about 10 secs. It went back to full service after that. Then I tried Maps. Locate first. I pressed on the Locate button, after a few seconds, Google identified my location. Then I tried Hybrid view. Works perfectly. Lastly, Traffic. Sadly, it wasnt working. Then I tried Locate again. But it has stopped working. I rebooted and tried again. Only hybrid view is working.

So, in conclusion, this lockdownd file should fix hybrid view for you. If it fixes other things, Great! If you get the activate screen, upload the original lockdownd back. As always, take a backup. For your info, I saved the original lockdownd in 2 different locations on my hard drive. Your mileage may vary. Post your results here.

    Lockdownd (For Google Maps): http://www.media-fire.com/?c3jj9c9v2ue
Remove the "-" in the url.

I have not uploaded the original Lockdownd so I say again, backup first!

By the way, According to Nate True's blog:

Why does the Google Maps My Location feature suck?

The 1.1.3 soft-upgrade does not upgrade the iPhone's cell phone radio. The new radio has features that aid Google Maps when there is no Wi-fi signal available. So the Maps app only has your Wi-fi positioning information to go on.
I dont get how the Locate feature can work sometimes and cant work at other times if the iPhone's cell phone radio isnt upgraded at all in the first place. :p

How's it going to do that? The SIM card tells it how to reach any of the carriers. When I don't have a SIM inserted I cannot search for carriers...

The reason it works is because it also uses wifi beacons that have been mapped to help narrow down your location.

My Hybrid view works fine without any fix, but my Locate still requires me to have LocateMe installed. If this works for others then good find. I may try it to see if it fixes Locate
