Mail With Exchange Wierd Prob
Rite i have been looking at connecting the iphone to an exchange mail box, and just one inbox needed, until the calenders can work. Now i have added the box etc and i can send via the mailbox, but it does not receive any messages to the inbox.
I know you do need IMAP enabled, and i am the network admin, but it is too much of a security risk at the moment to get it enabled, just to work on my iphone. I did have a HTC before and if synced to OWA with only a few lines of info LOL.
I just wish it would work over OWA.
Are there going to be any developments to get this working by apple?
It seems a pain in tha ass as IMAP also don't do calenders etc...
And i have no idea how it is sending mail as This is always the pain to get working, but i just cannot receive!
Let me know if any development is in the pipeline for an app for the phone. I have looked at the on-line forwarding from OWA to pop bodge but for the flagship apple phone it does seem to be missing a few corporate mail options.
Many Thanks for any input.

The reason that you can send mail is most likely that you have properly configured the sending portion of the mail account on the iPhone and as I'm sure you know, Exchange uses standard SMTP on port 25 (unless configured otherwise) to send mail. So there's no reason why you couldn't send.
As for receiving, you are correct that you must enable IMAP, which can be done with SSL to reduce the security risk. As for development, there was (is) an initiative to run a php script on the phone itself to get mail, but as of the 1.1.1 update you can't load it anymore, so unless you're still on 1.0.2 and can hack your phone it's not an option.
The only other options you have are....
1) Set up a server side forwarding rule to send all your e-mail to a yahoo, gmail, etc account and then "reply" by composing an e-mail in the Exchange "send only" account. This will allow you to get your e-mail and send a response (though not a REAL reply) from your correct e-mail address.
2) Sign up for the 60 day trial from Synchronica (www.syncml.biz)...only a temporary solution, unless you can fork out $2000 for the solution.
3) There is an opensource software package called pop2owa http://www.pop2owa.com/en/index.php that creates a pop server on your PC that acts as a gateway to get email from Exchange using the OWA protocols. It works but has some issues. The developer is a nice guy and is looking for input.
Hope this helps, FWIW i'm in the same boat.

I've resorted to using Safari to access mail via OWA. Starting to miss my good old Blackberry.. Well perhaps not too much..

thanks for the info, just wish apple had thought of this before, as sometimes IMAP is not a option, and then what about calenders?
By the way iam in the uk using ibrickr and firmware 1.0.2 LOL so can hack it LOL

Why do you consider IMAP a security issue? I'm not directing this anywhere, I am just curious, considering you already run OWA.
I run a small exchange environment and have for years. Turning on IMAP was about a 5 minute decision and it works great. (Ok, no calender access but other than that it works fine).
Again, just curious on the security issues you see.

well not really a security issue as such, but out OWA is using SSL and i know you can use it on IMAP also. But as I'm the only 1 with an iphone i cannot rearly justify the time messing around on it to get it working. Also mail is a problem but i can use the browser to get to OWA which is not such a biggie, but i do use alot of calenders for jobs etc..
it is a bit of a shame as i rearly love the phone and i suppose apps will come out in time to sort some of the problems, but it is a shame they didn't take the same Microsoft approach as active sync and being able to sync with a OWA server for contacts etc..
but i suppose you cannot have everything and i love the phone anyway LOL
