I had a theory about this 1011 error:

Assuming this error has been caused by the baseband firmware being erased / corrupted and the phone being rebooted before you have written back a good firmware.

Now the only confusing part for me is some people say they are stuck in recovery mode and all they can do is launch itunes, whilst others say they can get the phone to boot but they can't do much without wifi running, but if they are all failing the restore with 1011, we won't worry about that yet.

Its safe to say that itunes is trying to do a restore the phone but fails because the baseband is incomplete / missing.

Now the question is, is it even trying to update the firmware at all?

We know the hardware hack survives a restore from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 because the baseband firmware is not updated. The restore process does a check at some point and decides the firmware doesn't need to be updated because 03.14.08_G was already the latest baseband from 1.0.1!

So maybe the Restore process is not even trying to update the baseband firmware because it thinks its already on 03.14.08_G

Even though we know the baseband is only updated if there is a version mismatch (and the ipsw package has the newer file), I found the strings in bbupdater to support this:

    BBUpdater strings:
Answer 1: "will update with this version"
Answer 2: "an equal version is already installed"
Answer 3: "a later version is already installed, can't rollback"

So when the itunes update process is running, is BBUpdater bombing out and failing to update or is it bypassing a firmware flash because its getting Answer 2 ??

I spoke about this to GeeZuzz and Spoonet on IRC the other night and we tried a rather crude attempt at trying to fool the itunes update process into believing it had a newer baseband firmware. The most current firmware is ICE03.14.08_G.fls which is embedded in the 009-7698-4.dmg. We hexedited all occurances of this file name hoping the check is simply a filename comparison :-)

    e.g. we changed 03.14.08 to 03.15.09

I haven't spoken to Spoonet since, so I don't know if this was successful, the last issue he was having was putting the dmg back into the ipsw file and getting itunes to recognise the ipsw as a good file instead of downloading another.

Even if this filename check is no good and there is a slicker way of forcing the 1.0.2 update to think its got newer firmware than 03.14.08_G, I think this may be the key to getting a good baseband back on the phone for those that are stuck in recovery mode.

I restarted the phone after ieraser. My testpoints were not fine. So I had the No wifi state. But I have been able to restore successfully. And yes, the baseband firmware has been restored. Did it two times. By looking at all poeple having the 1011 error, I think I have been very lucky.

It always download a new one.
I will work on this later.

I just assume you left the baseband erased, but the bbupdater in the ramdisk
can not start the flashing process without reading the version from the chip.
Maybe the solution is to patch the bbupdater and repack the ramdisk dmg file
into the update image and then restore with iTunes.
After I installed AppTapp, my WiFi went dead. Then I tried to restore, and got stuck in restore mode (firmware update process doesn't complete).

I can see the phone in iPhuc, but if I try grestore /phonedmg it says "Send ramdisk failed. Aborting".

Now depending what mode you are in you can try the manual jail break method just to get it back to normal mode, and continue using the dropbear method but instead of installing dropbear you try to install bbupdater and ICExxxx.fls file so you can restore your fw back to original.

Yes, it can connect with iPhuc. But when I try grestore /phonedmg it says "Send ramdisk failed. Aborting."

    Any suggestions?

I'm beginning to think that the AppTappInstaller is the issue... does anyone know what it does when it installs other than put the applications on your phone? (yes i know some of you had this issue after doing the ieraser bit, but a bunch of us have also had this problem w/o ever touching the insides of the phone --aside from opening it-- or running the geohot app's)
