Default Locked vs Unlocked: What's the difference?

    Hi,

I was wondering what differs an iPhone sold in a country where it's locked to a carrier (such as AT&T) and an iPhone sold in a country where it's officially unlocked.

I live in Belgium and here - because of the law - Apple HAD to sell it unlocked for a premium price. The thing is when you buy it it doesn't have to be activated in store. You just activate it home with iTunes. And software updates don't change anything at all.

So I'm just very curious. What is it?? Some kind of special chip for this kind of country? An approved IMEI? (Which then wouldn't be such a problem for hackers. Wasn't there a way to change 'em to another back in the iPhone EDGE days?)

    Thanks a lot,
    Arnaud

    man its just simple
its all the same thing for locked or unlocked
the benifit of having unlock phone is that you can use it with any simcard in the world...
    got it...
and there is no special chip used or something
its just the IMEI and some other serial number that is registered to apple so everytime you coonect it to itunes it check on apple server that if you imei is registered or not
if it is then it sends you a unlock vai itunes
    hope that helps you
