Default Learn to reverse engineer iPhone OS

    Hi guys.
First of all, sorry if I have posted this in the wrong section, didn't find any other appropriate section for this.

Basically I want to learn to jailbreak/reverse engineer the iPhone. No, not using tools like *ra1n or *pwn etc, but doing it myself. Like geohot or the devteam, they create tools like these, I want to learn to do that as well. I really want to get into stuff like that..
I know it's a long and boring process and very difficult, but I am willing to learn, even if it takes years. I just want to learn doing something like that. I always wanted to do something like that..

I have no experience with stuff like that and don't know where to start from. I'm at uni, my first year, doing a degree in Computer Games Programming. So my programming skills are also very limited at the moment (mainly just Java and C#). I don't have much experience with Linux either, just very little.

I wanted to ask if someone could help me and guide me to the right track. I really want to get into this, but I don't know where to start from or how to start. I just need a starting point, after that, I will be able to walk my way myself and move onto the more advanced stuff.. I just need to know where to start from..

I would really appreciate if someone could help me out, who knows.. maybe I'll be releasing the next generation jailbreak tools soon.
    Thank you.

It's difficult to provide a true 'starting point', as exploits like these involve so many different things. Let me try and point you in the right direction though...

From my (extremely limited) understanding of the subject, there are a few key skills that would make a notable addition to your skillset if you were looking to do this in the future. You'd want to be a thoroughly experienced Electrical Engineer so that you could use the tools required to connect to and monitor the true I/O of the chips involved. You'd want to be at least bare-level experienced in programming embedded systems and the caveats involved with that, as a lot of the exploits are based around bugs in the existing embedded systems code for the hardware. Past that, you'd want to have base level programming experience so that you could look for, identify, and exploit any of the software level bugs that could be found.

All told, it takes a lot of time and work to get to the level these people are working at, but it takes very *little* time to really get started with it. Pick up a few books on electrical engineering, make sure you know how to use a soldering iron and a multimeter/voltmeter, make sure you know how to use the monitoring equipment needed to read the output directly from the chips. Make sure you're experienced with the programming languages that are being used to program the OS and the underlying embedded systems portions.

I'm sure there are more experienced developers and people more experienced in the jailbreak scene that can provide more focused information, but I'm fairly certain that all of what I mentioned above would be great information to know for this process.
