Heya folks,

I was wondering - being the non-american I am - if anybody had seen any language files laying around inside the iPhone. For instance a DB file containing the words the iPhone knows how to spell.

Such a file would be used by the keyboard so it would recognize which keys you were meaning to press when typing up an e-mail.

Reason I was wondering is that for the people where english isn't the native tongue it would be nice to be able to patch the "intelligent dictionary" to a different language.
I suspect a modified of aspell has been used - or something similar. Which would make the job somewhat easier (aspell dictionaries are out there to be downloaded free of charge).

People in my country has created a contact with all the words they use in e-mails and SMS's so the dictionary has learned these.. However it's not exactly a perfect solution
Both for the time consuming part of it, and for the fact that the english words will still pop in..


So.. Any insight into this problem from someone with ssh access to their iPhones?

Oh man.. Noone has found anything while looking around with iFuntastic or SSH clients?

thats wrong there were here already a tread where somebody find a languege file and mod his iphone to an other languege!

Then that is NOT what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about a way to change the dictionary, not the display language.
The dictionary is the one controlling the guessing when you type in an e-mail or SMS or so. If that could be localized for use in other countries, it would be great.
As it is now, it would only benefit in e-mail writing (seeing as the phone part is still locked down), but still. It will be useful in the future.

There is a file named dynamic-text.dat who contains our "custom dictionnary". This Hex-file stored in /private/var/root/Library/Keyboard is realy easy to update. Each word is separate with hexa(00)... just update this file with "entire dict" will try to do it for french....

Sounds great. Because (apart from the unlock) this is the only thing keeping me from getting an iPhone. I would hate to be unable to actually type on it

I don't care about the display language - in fact I'd rather have it in english than my native language - put the dictionary might be a problem

it seems that the ipod touch got a French(and lot of other) buid in Dictionary. I just hope that there is going to be a way to get the dic. from the ipod touch and use it in the iphone ...

W&S the ipod touch will be released at the end of september...

someone will most probably dump the files form the ipod touch so that we can use it

Haven't paid much attention to the new iPods. And still haven't bough an iPhone.
Rumormill says iPhone will get released in England/Germany/France middle/end of November. So.. if nothing else, then we'll see where the magical files are placed.

Where are you going to get the Dictionary input from ?
