Just about to get an iPhone
I'm new here and I've been reading everything about iPhone unlocking procedures on the internet and especially here for the last 2 days.
Even though lots of my questions were answered, I still have some left open.
I'm living in Germany and wanted my aunt from the US to have send me an iPhone. So am I right under the assumption that she can just go to the Apple Store and get the 8GB iPhone for $399 without signing up for an AT&T contract or something like that? Just the iPhone, and nothing more?
When I receive the phone I decided I'll give the 2-needle-hardware unlock a shot. Now, I somewhere read (I think it was a swiss site) that for the hardware unlocking procedure I still need to insert an AT&T card into the iPhone at some point during the process? Is this true?
What SIM card do I actually have to have inserted in the iPhone during the whole unlock procedure? Can I also just put no card at all in there? This is something that had me confused.
And during hardware unlock: When disassembling the iPhone, it still has to be powered on, right?
Alright, thank you guys for reading and for the upcoming replies!
yes, your aunt can buy an iphone without any AT&T contract.
There is an AT&T simcard included (not activated).
You have to pay 19% german "Mehrwertsteuer"at german customs.
And I think it will be better to turn off the phone when disassembling it ...
Greetings from Germany
I didn't think some German would reply, lol.
Yeah, I know about the VAT/MwSt... And actually it's 19% MwSt + 6%-12% "Zollgebühren" (such a rip-off anyway )
But a friend of mine is frequently flying to New York, so she could just put it in her lugagge and pretend it's hers
About turning it off: on http://iphone.unlock.no/ step 4 tells to disassemble the phone and after that step 5 begins with "Return to PuTTY [...]" and later on "[...] After it's done erasing it's very important that you don't restart your phone! [...]"
So that kinda got me confused. So I can turn it off, disassemble it, turn it on again and start Putty?
And I'm still unclear about the whole SIM card thing. Nobody seems to ever say whether a card has to be inserted during the procedure (or if it even has to be an AT&T card).
