In addition to my previous reply... I agree wiht some people on here that Steve couldn't care less. Because he couldn't! He is just maintaining his relationship with the iPhone carriers by stating that its a cat and mouse game.

Any reply to this question is pure speculation. We will all know the answer when the upcoming firmware goes to 1.1.1. If the unlock still works - then he doesn't care but if the unlock no longer works --- you have your answer ---- without any long words or questions !!!

I agree that off the record he couldn't care less but I believe he has some obligation to AT&T and the euro carriers to atleast look as if he cares and expect him to relock the phones. That being said, I really believe he'll keep the relock very simple. Maybe even simple enough so that the current unlocks might even still work.

You never know the unlocks may only affect NEW phones purchased, not older ones that are already released. You never really know the truth till it's all said and done.

I agree also, but one must also consider that Apple doesn't JUST make money from selling you an iPhone carriers have agreed to give apple a % of their revenue from the iPhone plans. So of couse hes gonna want to uphold his part of the deal it wouldn't surprise me that in the contract between AT&T, T-mobile etc etc it states some repercussions due to have an unlock out their. Because AT&T AND apple to some degree will be losing $$$. Its more the business relation ship that they are concerned about rather than the consumer. I mean its rumored that O2 are paying 40% of plan revenue for exclusivity. Which I doubt those numbers are that high but they definitely gave apple a pretty high % for going with them another carrier. But I don't think Jobs will start a huge campaign to lock down the iPhone.
4gig Iphone - T-Mobile godness

It's all a matter of percentages. Apple sells iPhones, makes money. ATT makes money by filling the role as carrier. Apple could very easily make more money from ATT then it could from additional unit sales. Either way, it's going to be a big update, one that I'm going to sit out for a while until the dust settles.

Does anyone have an idea if the 1.1.1 fw will be able to "downgrade" to 1.0.x?
