[iTunes] Rejecting SIM during Restore
I recently was asked to upgrade my iphone using itunes but half way through the update itunes said it didn't recognise my sim and my phone froze with the itunes logo on the screen only allowing me to make emergency calls. I gave it to a family friend who rebooted it so everything was wiped and when I plugged it n to sync it with itunes all of the memory was taken upon the panel by 'other' material even though nothing at all was saved on the phone I clicked restore to try to gain the material back but itune again came up with the sim error. I was told of a website called ziphone? that might have downloadable material to fix it ?

Does it have an error message like "iPhone could not be restored. (1011)" Or anything like that. Try again and see what it says and post it here. Then we may be able to help. And yes ziphone is downloadable material but depending on your circumstances it may not help, in most cases it wont. So try again and post the error, try to get the exact message or even a screenshot.

put it in dfu mode and restore that should fix it, if your using a approved sim and its rejected take it to an apple shop. If its a non approved sim you need to unlock the baseband after any upgrades. This fourm can help. Just read up a bit more, and if you ask for help try to give as much info as possible like firmware and the carrier sim you want to use, an unlocked iPhone can use all sims.
Good luck

The phone was unlocked but the problem doesn't seem to affect the SIM in the phone as my network O2 IRL is still visible at the top of the screen and I can receive texts and calls but I cant get into any of the facilities on the phone. It just has the iTunes logo signalling me to attach it to iTunes to finish the restore/sync. There's an info tab at the bottom which brings up my IMEI and ICCID numbers. This is the message that itunes shows when I connect the phone to my laptop.
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier store to receive a replacement SIM."
I don't understand as the SIM works in my phone and no errors come up on the phone to say it's an unsupported or invalid SIM since it was unlocked last January.

OK, no big deal. You restored the firmware, so now you have a locked iPhone again. Did you restore to firmware 1.1.4? We have to make sure you are at firmware 1.1.4 first, will guide you to an unlocked 1.1.4 iPhone then.
please report back

I think so but I can't get into any iPhone info through iTunes to doublecheck. The update alert has come up on my computer for the past 6 weeks or so but I didn't have time to download and install from intunes until around 2 weeks ago when it all happened. Because I waited it could be an earlier version

OK, here is what you are doing.
to make sure, your iPhone is on firmware 1.1.4 locked, please do the following:
Download the iPhone firmware 1.1.4 to your PC from here:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22056
Make sure to have the latest version of iTunes on your PC. Start iTunes and disconnect the iPhone from your PC. Shut down the iPhone. Hold the Home button and - while still holding it - connect the iPhone to the PC. iTunes should recognize and iPhone in Restore Mode. Release Home-Button.
You will see iTunes options for Update and restore of the iPhone. On Windows hold Shift (on the keyboard); on Mac hold Option. Klick Restore in iTunes while holding. A dialog will popup asking for the location of the firmware file. Point to the one you just downloaded and let iTunes do the job. Your iPhone will be at 1.1.4 locked, the message you already have been seeing will popup again. Close iTunes and start iLiberty (for Mac or Windows), you get it at

Report back once you are there, I will guide you then.

Start iLiberty while PC and iPhone are connected, quit iTunes before. In iLiberty select "Other Tools". Hit the button "Enter DFU Mode" and quit iLiberty then. Start iTunes and it should work.
You are on Windows, right?
If you are on a Mac, start the Mac version of iLiberty and choose "Enter DFU mode" in menu "Advanced".
