iTunes cannot backup iPhone and frequent random crashes
Hello all, I'm having two problems (maybe related?):
1) When trying to backup my iPhone with iTunes, I get "iTunes could not backup the iPhone "X" because it disconnected."
2) Every some time, once or twice a day, I cannot get my iPhone out of sleep: it is black and stays black even when I press the power/home buttons. I have tried pressing for a long time the home button, but only a reset will work (holding down power and home buttons together for around 10 seconds).
Now, in order to help you make a good diagnosis, let me explain what I have done since upgrading to firmware 2.2.1 on two iPhones, since the other one doesn't have any of the above problems. Let me call the problematic iPhone "iPhone A" and the one that works fine "iPhone B".
So both iPhone A and B were on firmware 1.1.4 unlocked/activated/jailbroken with iLiberty+, and working fine. Then I wanted to upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, and started with the iPhone B by doing the following:
1) QuickPwn -> it worked but no signal, so I did
2) Pwnage from DFU mode -> all working
3) Installed at least one free app from AppStore, then
4) Installed Installous and installed a few cracked apps -> all working (including backup with iTunes)
With iPhone A (which is having the problems), I did
1) Pwnage from Restore Mode (the DFU didn't work...) -> it worked but the iPhone would crash randomly (as I said above)
2) Pwnage again, this time from DFU mode by fixing iTunes first -> still same random crash, and because I could not see my Appulous (I should have installed a free app first), I did another
3) Pwnage... This time my Appulous didn't work, but I found out that I had to install an app from AppStore, so I did it and then my Appulous worked (but I haven't done the free app first). After that, I'm not sure if I still made a backup after, but I still have random crashes and iTunes cannot do backups. I could still do backups just before the last Pwnage.
Thanks a lot for your help. I hope it's all clear...
UPDATE: My iPhone just crashed again (in sleep mode, so I didn't actually see it crashing). I had to reset it to make it work again.

Patching files & running Appulous/Installous makes the matter more complicated to find the reason 4 crashing
Start again with the phone, do a full DFU restore without all the patching & cracking stuff and see if it still crashes then.

Thanks for your answer n350z.
What do you mean by "patching files"?
The thing is that the other iPhone doesn't have any problem at all, so do you still reckon it could be appulous/installous causing the problems? I wouldn't mind restoring again, but then I would be losing all SMS and settings from my iPhone... I would prefer to keep them, is there a way I could first fix the iTunes backup problem? My iPhone has just crashed for the third time today, without any reason I can understand...
My last question, what do you mean by doing a "full DFU restore without all the patching & cracking stuff"? I've only put OpenSSH, Installous and BOSSPrefs, is that patching?
Thanks.

Hi
I don't personally agree with cracking apps but Im not saying that appulous/installous will be the reason, just that having them on the phone & patching your MobileInstallation files to run cracked apps complicates finding the reason.
I would restore & do a simple activate & jaibreak with quickpwn then I would see if the crash still continues to happen before I started installing anything else.

Thanks, but I haven't patched the mobileinstallation file on any of the iPhones I was initially speaking about. Some other discussions in this forum actually recommend patching the mobileinstallation file to fix this issue with iTunes' backup, but I don't know how to do it (and I have firmware 2.2.1, not 2.1). Maybe I should patch the file and uninstall all my appulous in the hope that backups are again possible. Would anybody know how to do this?
Is there another way to backup and restore SMS messages, except with iTunes?
Thanks

Ok, I understood what you meant by "patching": I've patched the Mobile Installation file without knowing, by installing it in Cydia (thinking that it was necessary, as they say, in order to use cracked apps). The funny thing is that my other iPhone doesn't have this patch and the cracked apps are all working perfectly.
Unfortunately, removing the patch doesn't fix my iTunes backup problem...
If I can find this Mobile Installation file, I'll try putting the original one and see if this helps. Unless someone has got a better solution. Thx

OK, so I've found a way to save my SMS and I've restored completely to normal 2.2.1 (just to make sure everything is reset), then again to 2.2.1 custom firmware. I haven't installed anything, just did a restore. The good news is that my backups are working again, but I still have random crashes. Please help me!
I did notice that even though I had fully restored in DFU mode, I still had the "Numeric battery" instead of the normal one in the status bar. That makes me think that the restore is not really resetting EVERYTHING. Since I still have crashes, wouldn't it be worth trying to really revert my iPhone to factory install? How do I do that?
Thanks in advance.
PS: I forgot to put my iPhone in Restore Mode when doing the first restore to 2.2.1, but then I did it again in DFU mode, restoring to Custom 2.2.1. Is is alright? Please help!

I've restored again completely, then Quickpwn and I did not use the restore option from an old backup (set up as new iPhone). I haven't done anything, not even Music/Photos!
I'll see if the crashes continue.

Ok good luck
If it does crash after doing what your saying above that will be a strange problem.
