I had the same problem, kept saying I needed to reinstall, the iphone software wasn't installed. After several reboots and various attempts, I installed an old version of Itunes an old version of Quicktimes. One of them added a "Apple software Update" program to the XP menu. This updates it internally, and fixed everything for me to get it to reconize the phone.

    Hope this helps out.

These problems (and the YouTube issue) actually prove that although it is possible to activate the iPhone without an AT&T contract, it may not work for a long time. As soon as Apple offers a new firmware for the iPhone and/or a new iTunes software which may be required to download new stuff, you're busted.

I'm afraid it won't be much different with an unlock solution. Theoretical scenario: when you connect the "unlocked" iPhone to iTunes to download music/videos, the "unlocked" iPhone will check with a registration server from Apple/AT&T if the SIM card is still locked to AT&T and if not, the phone will de-activate itself or whatever.

Honestly: I don't see a PERMANENT solution for unlocking the iPhone unless Apple/AT&T allow it.

Stupid question: why doesn't Apple/AT&T offer an unlock code for locked iPhones for an additional 199 USD or even 299 USD? I bet a lot of people would prefer to pay this amount of money to forget about the hassle with activation/unlocking.
Why not sell an unlocked iPhone right away, let's say for 799 instead of 599 USD? Am I missing something. Over here in Germany, I can pay 100 Euro to T-Mobile and they provide the unlock code immediately.
