my phone volume button says headphones after I pull the headphone jack without stopping a song first, while locked

in that state I cannot hear a phone conversation when the phone is held to my ear. I can get sound out of the speakerphone though.

the fix for me most recently, and this may just be a coincidence, is to play a song thru the speakerphone, then pause the song and quit iPod to Springboard.

I then dial 611 on the keypad, which confirms with tones, and I now have sound when holding the phone to my ear, and changing volume shows the volume icon, and now does not say headphones

the problem is deffinitely related to unplugging a headphone jack

and I dont doubt it might actually be dirt in the contacts..

thats just what worked for me this time..

    Guys!!

Sometimes the iphone gets confused..... All you have to do is... to unlock the phone, reconnect the headset and then unplug it. If the ipod starts then all you have to do is listen to the song a little bit and remove the headphones after pausing the song. You can confirm if it is working because the "lock/unlock" sound will come through the phone speakers instead of the headset.

Sometimes it could be due to dust so just blow in the jack or insert and remove the headphones several times...

The first thing work for me... I was really scared when it happened. Its 4:20 AM think i have a sigh of relief now!!

    Hope this helps.....

ok, so I have the same problem, but since i just saw this post, i have to get to the office to try these solutions.

My experience is that, if i downgrade it to version 1.1.1 it works fine, none of this headphone volume, any other version of upgrade or restore from 1.1.2 up to 2.1 I would get the headphone volume thing... definately a software thing, I even had the headset plug unit replaced(which includes the power switch, volume switch, the Vibrator motor, silent switch and the headphone plug)

just plugging and unplugging the headphones jack many times ( 10 likely ) will fix the issue

The phone works fine with the headphones plugged in.

I have tried all the usual solutions, inserted and removed the headset (at least 50 times)
    Soft reboot
    full restore

Nothing seems to work. I have searched on this and it seems to be a well know issue but there doesnt seem to be any firm solutions that i can find to fix the problem

I am in australia, so returning to Apple is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Default iphone headset fix

Ok, I tried for like 2 days off and on trying to fix this issue. It happened before and I fixed it in like 5 minutes with the "play the ipod and hit pause and pull out the headset". But that wouldnt work this time. I tried everything but a complete restore. Called the "apple genius" and he tried to sell me a new phone. Wouldnt tell me how to fix or if anyone else had this problem. kept telling me how my warranty was up and they might be able to work me in this week. Whatever. He was no help at all. Made the whole thing even worse. Anyway, read this article and used my headphone jack to push on the contact. Plugged in and out a cople times and changed the volume up and down at the same time and finally the screen came back and said "Ringer"!!! I was back!! anyway, I havent taken my phone apart but I think it may come soon.

I had that problem a few times, I just put my headphones back in and yanked them out kinda hard. It worked everytime... sometimes there is something that gets stuck in there like fuzz or lint and that usually comes out.

Solution for me!!! My Iphone was stuck on headphones mode.

    I spended 3 hours trying to reset/backup/restore/plug/unplug....
finally, I used baby Qtips to clean out the headphone jack. you have to get the small baby and you have to squize and roll it around on your finger tips until it is small enough to fits in the jack.
"GET THE GOOD BRAND" the stick is make out of plastic not paper, so it doesn't break in the jack and the cotton must be tight.
