    An update:

I took my phone to a mobile repair shop. They also service ipods. They replaced the headphone componant. It was damaged and they also said they have fixed a few of them already which was interesting. The guy said its the exact same problem as the 4th gen ipods, dodgy manufacturing.

As far as I can tell its a software problem, not hardware. I get it occasionally when I don't pause a song before removing the headphones. To fix it I plug them back in, play a different song, pause it and remove the headphones. To confirm its fixed I just go to the phone and press the keys, if it's fixed I can hear the buttons being pressed.

Its actually both Hardware and software.

Some lucky people can fix this by the methods described, others (and an increasing amount) are finding none of these fixes work and the headphone jack needs to be replaced. As it was in my case.

I think the tell tale signs are when it start off being able to be fixed with blowing in the socket, or unplugging headphones... then it moves on to the jack failing altogether. thats how it happend with me and many others around

I had the same exact problem, and no restores (upgrade or downgrade) helped. It is a software problem and I think it lies in the baseband firmware, so I tried to virginize it... I downgraded the software to 1.02 then ran the virginize pack from i.unlock.no which downgraded the baseband, and lo and behold, it worked again!

Default iPhone stuck in headset mode? Try this.

So your iPhone is stuck in headset mode. No sound from earhole speaker, no sound from external speaker unles you use speaker mode during a call. When you change volume, the volume icon says ringer(headphones) even though no headphones are plugged in. Every time you plug in your headphones, the ipod function starts playing songs, and stops when you unplug.

You've tried cleaning the jack. You've looked at previous posts in this forum, and at the apple knowledgebase.

None of these suggestions have helped, and you don't want to hard reset your phone. This is what i think worked for me.

    1. Plug in headset when iPhone is locked.
    2. Hold down the power button so that the "slide to power off" bar appears.
    3. Remove the headphones.
    4. Push the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the screen.
    5. Go to the phonepad and see if pressing the buttons now produces sound.

(It's possible that I've forgotten something that I did, so the next time my phone locks, I'll try the same method again and update this post. Unless someone else is having the problem and wants to verify.)
