i had the same problem all day but i fixed it... my problem was i couldn't even get the connect to itunes... my iphone was very sluggish and it would either just give me the apple logo or turn off when i press the home and sleep keys...
what i did was this... took out sim card... turned on... waited forever for the phone to boot.... then tried a restore.... got the connect to itunes screen and connected it and restored it completely... it seems that 1.0.2 doesnt like to be jailbroken too much... so using independence... i jailbroke it twice in an attempt to get everything (activation, ssh, sftp, scp, youtube, and turbo sim) and now its rejailed synced and working.... and hopefully staying this way

I had the exact same problem - frozen at the apple logo (5 minutes or more). Rebooted about 10 times, exact same thing.
I put the phone in recovery mode successfully by holding down sleep + home for about a minute, and then reinstalled the image successfully in iTunes, but on reboot it was still stuck on the apple logo (I left it for 15 minutes!)
I just gave up and left it at this point (on the apple logo), fell asleep and dreamed about how much money I'd waster - and yet when I woke up - tada! It was at the AT&T signup screen, and from here I did the usual, iActivator, iPhoneTool etc.
I'm in the UK and couldn't take to an apple store either, and was very worried!
Basically guys, just leave it for a few hours (might need cooling down or something - who knows, this wasn't a scientific thing by any means!). If it runs out of battery before coming to the home screen, charge it using the AC adaptor and then turn it on.
Hope this helps!

just let it on the ac until it starts?! or disconnect from the ac?
