iPhone Sim Free Unlock - Could it install other items?
I'm asking this as an honest question and I'm not trying to stir up any FUD.
Let's assume the IPSF unlock software launches next week and works "as advertised." I know a lot of people will run the software and be delighted. Without knowing IPSF as well as a 'regular' company, I'm wondering if they can install a backdoor on an iPhone? A key/password logger?
I'd like to hear what people think about this. Would there be a way of checking what's been added/removed/disabled?
No that's a good point, after all you're installing a closed-source app on the phone.
However... say you remove the 'unlock.app' from the phone immediately after it's done its job, any half-competent hacker can verify that no new daemons are running, and that all the BSD userland utilities are the correct files, etc.
For traditional unix backdoors etc. it's easy enough to check for these. If they installed a full-on rootkit then you'd notice that the darwin kernel would be different - and the unlock is supposed to survive a full restore (up to 1.0.2) which replaces all the kernel / userland software. No rootkit would survive a full restore.
The only other potential malicious code could be loaded into the bootloader or radio firmware... but this wouldn't have access to your data, if it did anything funny GSM-wise then the networks would probably kick you off though...
If you are worried about it, you can do a complete restore after you do the unlock procudure. Supposedly the IPSF software unlock can survive a regular restore. That should give you a fresh unlocked iPhone, which should just need to be activated using the usual tools.
