Default iPhone screen resolution and the graphical API

    Dears,

I want to know the reason behind why the screen resolution of the iPhone 3Gs is still uncomparable to the other hardwares like SS or LG. Is it to support the former API or SDK that have been distributed??? Were those things designed to support the improvement of the screen resolution in the future???

    Cheers.

I think it relates to video playback, they just want a standard that covers all their supported vids, and streams like utube, mp4, mov and such. Its still high quality there has just been no reason to upgrade, if anything the gpu and cpu combination is still under performing for the desired resolution from a games perspective. It must be hard to provide a fanless device that doesn't overheat and can still provide a good 10 hours heavy use on such a slim battery. Other devices such as the sony's, samsungs and LG still come no where near the performance for form factor of the iphone, most are still lacking the storage too.

The big bonus of the 3GS is the 32GB nand, with the size of the phone staying still the slim'st on the market. No other company is even close to shrinking their phones down to the iphone size let alone pack in 32GB.

Changing the screen resolution would screw up compatibility with apps that are already in the app store. Obviously, at some point in the future when Apple's iPhone/iPod Touch line is more segregated, there will be compatibility issues, but it is best to hold off on this as long as possible.

Also, I've never really felt the need for a higher res screen and I don't hear many people complaining about it. After a certain point, more pixels is just a matter of bragging about specs. The pixel density is already pretty high.

"Compatibility" that is the word I'm concerned. The OS/SDK should be designed to support the resolution upgrade in mind, shouldn't it?

For that level of video format support it's understandable; keep the pixel density in the level that human's eyes cannot notice while minimize no. of the pixels for the performance/frame rate is the right path. But what if someday in the future when 3.5" is not large enough????? such as the foldable screen???? or we think until that time it would be worth having the new OS/SDK for the new device???

resolution independence has been a purported core feature of osx for years now... it was supposed to be implemented in snow leopard, i think.

i'm not sure where it is now... but it is coming, believe it.

i GUARANTEE the iphone folks have put alot of thought into increased screen resolutions vs. current apps.... actually, i believe that official guidelines encourage designing everything in your apps to be resolution independent.

so uh... calm down? 163ppi is pretty darn good, and i don't really see much reason to increase that in the near future. maybe once OLEDS start popping up....
