iPhone sale surge after 1.1.1 FW out?
I am just wondering if anyone has seen the same same...
So many of my friends rushed out to buy iPhone before the 1.1.1 gets to the stores, so they can still unlock it. They were all holding out because of the 2yr contract even after the price drop. Now that unlocking is not working on the 1.1.1 yet, they finally decide to get one before the 1.02 runs out. I guess Steve Job did not see the iPhone sale surge enough after the price drop, so he release a new FW to push out the iPhone with old FW. This is so funny.
I even had a friend that call around to find a phone with old firmware. Maybe Steve will realize that unlocked phones will sell much more and that revenue sharing from ATT is actually hurting the iPhone sales.

Apple will make more money on the money you're spending through AT&T than on the phone itself.

They saw it and they put a limit to how many you can buy: no mo' than 5! per customer

Steve can care less about revenue from unlocked phones.
That's a one time purchase.
The carrier contract is is where the bucks are. Hardware mfgr and carrier alike make their money on the contract you sign.
No contract = no revenue.
So tell me again why Apple wants to let you unlock a phone? Oh right, so they can make $400 on the purchase and lose $1500 on your contract over the first 2 years....
Yup lot of economic sense there

So you're saying he wouldn't care about sales of ipods then. Because Ipod sales are one time purchases, with future sales of itune music & videos... just like unlocked iphones.

Yes, Steve Jobs KNOWS he can make more money making an unlocked iPhone; why do you think that so many people are making a big deal out of unlocking the phone?
But the reason he can't do that is because applying this high technology to any carrier would be a very riskey variable, which means that they would practically go crazy because they would have no idea on which carriers are doing the best with them, who's buying them (i.e. outside of the country), or where they're ending up.
It's easy to say and imagine it, but not good in the long term (or economically). Besides, think of all the hard managing Apple would have to do with the different carriers. The US isn't just compiled of AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon
, and plus the rest of the world.

I bought nine 4GB phones today and was able to get two 8GB 38's. This guy was able to find me 2 from a wall of 39's.
5th Ave in NYC still has many 4GB models

I'm happy with just the one I have! If some update comes out in a few weeks that allows me to get the 1.1.1 stuff hassle free, that's great. If not? I don't care. I have an awesome phone, and it already has everything I think it needs.
If you don't have one, now is the time to buy!

No, I mean that there is MORE to be made from a contract.
iPods, like computers and peripherals are developed, marketed and priced to be one time purchases
iPhnes are developed, marketed and priced to be sold with a contract. The profit margin is in the contract, not the handset
So no he's not going to sacrifice 2+ years of income fr a fast buck now

Of course, I am sure there is more to be made from contract on per unit base. I would think Apple could have sold a lot more unlock units to match or even better the profit from the contract. GSM, EDGE are world standards. Unlocked phone are working perfectly fine around the world with confirmed reports. If he had made it easier for people to use their own SIM and worldwide launch, I bet there will be a shortage of iPhone now.
