Default IPhone is not recieving web sms

i have a problem with my unlocked IPhone, the problem is that its not recieving any sms that were sent from the web, or the ones which has non numerical senders, like my bank, free ADS, it only displays sms sent from phone numbers, or ones which has numerical values.
is anyone else facing the same problem?

I wonder if this is also the reason why I am not getting SMS notification from my provider if someone leaves a voicemail. I have a hardware unlocked iPhone and I've tried getting these notifications from two providers. No go.

yeah i think the problem is because the sender is in alphabetical format, and maybe the iphone just accepts numerical values,i.e phone numbers , is there a way that we can overcome this?

This is strange, since the mechanics of an SMS be it from an automatic service or individual are exactly the same with the exception of the NDI/CLI that is sent along, which tend to be a short number like 34501....

Some phones have the possibility of filtering out what may be considered as SMS advertising or broadcasting. It's a flag that you set in your phone's configuration which is then communicated to your operator via signaling -- like when you disable the show NDI/CLI setting. Check in the settings/phone via the config files if there isn't something hidden.

Re: the SMSs from your bank, vmail messages etc. I'm sure that the "from" short number that you receive is always the same? If so, try adding that number to your contacts list and see if that doesn't change something.

Let me know how you get on. This is a major issue as far as I'm concerned.

This is not the problem. The iPhone for all intent and purpose is really no different than a normal GSM phone.

i do recieve some sms alerts with no numbers , i used to with my old Nokia phone, the sender just pops up as HSBC or any name, i even tried sending myself an sms from an online sms service and it didnt get in.i think its something in the configuration which makes the iphone filter txt sms. but im not sure how to access nor change them.,

Actually text messages should work irrespective of the origin since and SMS is nothing more than a text message that is sent in a C7/SS7 signaling frame. Unicode messages are sent via MMS, since they are considered as photos.

I assume that you've put your SIM card in a normal phone and have tried sending yourself a message to see what happens and it works? Is so, this is very strange indeed since an SMS is far from rocket science and the mechanics of receiving/sending SMSs is identical be the emitting/receiving device an iPhone or normal GSM phone.

Two kind of SMS do not come in. When sender is a string or if the number is too long. My voicemail send a message with a 13 numbers as sender. I do not get them neither. If I try with Skype, the SMS comes in if I use my own number as sender, but not if I use my nick name.

This thread is really interesting and this could prove to be a problem for many of us. I need to think about what could be causing the iPhone to react this way and will get back to you.

Disregarding the vmail messages, I'm wondering if any of our friends with AT&T service have encountered the same problem with any provide banking companies or even operator messages when traveling in foreign countries.
