Hi Flash .
I had the same issue. i could not do any thing with my ip , only way to help it stay alive was using AC dapter which is not apple product. Finaly i restored it , and it worked with a new firmware. i recomment try to restore a latest firmware as many times as you can. It is worth to try.
How did you restore the iPhone without being able to connect it to the computer via USB? I know you can do a soft and hard reset under the iPhone's settings, but this doesn't re-write the original firmware image does it?
my computer and iTunes would not recongnize my iphone.... so i had to update my drivers.
I fixed it by going to “Device Manager”, right clicking on “Apple iPhone” under “Portable Devices” and selecting the “Update Driver Software”. The appropriate drivers are stored under “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple”. After the successful driver update, your iPhone will happily show up under the “USB Controller” indicating that the phone is ready for action. I’ve found many people having similar problems ....glad to help out anyway i can.

No need to have a computer. You just need to make your iPhone have a really big crash.
Apple gave us a lot of ways to do that.
Go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase all Data & Settings
While the process, just push Home and Wake button to power your iPhone off.
Then power it on. Wait for the iTunes logo.
There might be a problem with your data cable. Please check that first before checking your device. My data cable was damaged and couldn't connect my device.
