i'm in london uk, and hopefully i will be receiving my iphone in the next few days. the seller sent it to me by a slower service than was agreed so i am a bit unamused with that. however it does look like dvd jon's method seems to be the most simple and popular method around, and yeah worst case senario u can always deactviate it or do a full restore if thats needed when the unlocking hack comes out.

Euro SSN 999-99-9999 prepaid activation worked for me as follows (pre iphoneinterface & DVD Jon): Make sure you have an iTunes with no account yet, connect phone, sign up using your real name (as it appears on the card) and an existing address (picked a random business building in San Francisco, think this is very important as it got slightly corrected). Credit Check fails, you'll get redirected to AT&T, now use the same address for AT&T signup and the same STATE (CA in this case) on the next screen where you enter the CC details for the deposit. CC was a normal Austrian Visa, gives not only an activated iPhone but also an US iTunes account in the middle of Europe (assume so, haven't tried to buy any US content yet but it's being offered).

The only reason for doing this is that i wanted to stay on the safe side as long as the tinkering is going on, but you can't even roam with the cheap US plans (connecting to network yes, but no calls/SMS in most european countries i tried so far).

Does anyone here know whether the firmware on the European phones will be different to the ones in the US? I am considering buying a US iPhone, but am wondering whether I'll be able to reset it and sign it up to 02 when it launches in the UK?

It would be difficult for Apple to customize the iPhone for each individual European country would it not?
