Default iphone is completely DEAD. can apple store tell that it's been altered?

my wife's iphone just died. it started saying that it couldn't make or receive calls and needed to be repaired. it is unlocked with iunlock, on 1.0.2. i knew that i couldn't just walk in to an apple store and get it serviced. i have been trying to virginize and restore it to give me some better chance of getting service at the apple store... ya know, "i got this as a gift. just opened it, and it won't work..." to get around the whole contract thing.

the phone rapidly declined, and wouldn't function if plugged in. it would work fine if unplugged, but battery ran out quickly. It eventually ended up in recovery mode, so I tried to restore to 1.0.2 but at the very end of the process it said that it couldn't restore the phone. After that it turned off and i can't get it to do anything. plugging into the wall, itunes, trying to reboot. absolutely no response.

So, my question is, will the geniuses have a special utility that will get the thing to turn on and they'll be able to see my baseband has been altered, therefore denying me service/replacement?

    ugh.

i took mine in without ATT when it was stuck in endless restore but that was before they were really cracking down on iphones. it seems now that unless you provide them with an ATT phone number they wont do a thing, so cheapest way around this is set up a ATT prepaid number?

and no the geniuses do not have any special utility from my experience, they couldnt get mine out of restore and i had the same thing as you where it just deteriorated, they sent it out and i ended up with a new phone.

I asked one if they had any tools and they told me no.. All they could do was basic help and restore on the phone anything else they send it into apple hq to get worked on.Hence the iphone loaner program.
