But it doesn't seem to move up - does it take a lifetime to charge on USB?

Takes alot longer when you charge through USB. but on AC power usually take 2 hours max i think.

Sounds like you guys are using USB 1.0...

When plugged into my Mac Mini my iPhone takes about 2 hours to charge.

If you look in the manual though it says it takes something like 4 hours for a full charge.

AC should be slower than USB 2.0 but AC is faster than USB 1.0.

I think the reason is that computer USB ports are limited to providing 500 mA max, whereas the 5V charger that Apple supplies with the iPhone is rated at 1 A. More juice, faster charging.

The charger is yet another of the many reasons the iPhone is better value than an iPod touch, although they do get a stand, boohoo. If you have an old FireWire charger, which still works with current iPods, that will probably charge it faster still.

I just plug my iPhone into the power charger every second night regardless of how empty it is. Lithium ion cells don't like to be fully discharged or to be overcharged. Apple's charger cuts off when it is charged, so you can pick the iPhone up in the morning ready to go.

If you look on Apples website they have a description of how their LI batteries charge.

A quick charge till 80%, and then a slower, deep charge till 100%.
