Default iPhone Brick after built in 'Clear all data reset'

I picked up a second hand iPhone 3G yesterday..It has Cydia on it , so assume it must have already been jailbroken.

it was his daughters, and had about 5 pages of pointless games, apps kayie Perry chat apps and al the usual crap you would expect to find on a teenage girsl phone.

SO I used the General tab to do the Erase All Data reset..it says it will take about 1 hour, so i leave it plugged in to the power over night.

This morning it is a brick..it wont start, tit just sits with the Apple logo and that is it.
iTunes shows it is in Restore mode
I can also boot it in to DFU mode

    iTunes says
    name : iPhone
    Capacity: n/a
    Software: n/a
    Serial number: n/a

It will not restore using iTunes, It tries, then says
I just get an error message saying:

The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

And as usual with any software ..the More Information button is as useful as a chocolate fire guard.

I tried downloading the latest firmware from

Download iPhone Firmware / IPSW Files

but pwnage tool says the firmware bundle is wrong.

    So far I have tried
    4.2.1
    4.1.0
    4.0.2

and the result is always wrong firmware

    I am pretty sure this is a 3G and not a 3GS.
When i could view the serial number, I am pretty sure a web site said it was a 3G.
if I double clicked the home button, I did not get the 'Currently running apps' bar across the bottom like I do on the iPod4..so I seem to remember that this was on the 3GS and nto the 3G

Any ideas of where to go ? i still have maybe 2 hours to wait for all the firmware files to download

We say it all the time - Erase all data and settings is the wrong choice 99% of the time (even if you want a fresh start)

If it is truly a 3G (and I believe you) then iTunes will prevent you restoring any iOS 4.x version - except 4.2.1 - this is the "soft-SHSH" functionality that was added to iOS 4.0 for the iPhone 3G

One thing that could be causing problems is if you had previously played around with the hosts file (either deliberately or inadvertently via a tool that edits the host file for you)

    The easy fix is this:
    Download TinyUmbrella & run it
Go to the advanced tab, untick "set hosts to Cydia on exit", click Apply and close TinyUmbrella

Try again with the phone in DFU mode and restoring to iOS 4.2.1 (make sure your iTunes is 10.1 or higher as older versions of iTunes can't restore iOS 4.2.1)

If that still doesn't work, then you have a 3GS instead of a 3G.

    Ok, thanks

definitely a 3G..i checked the serial number and a number of guides on line on how to identify them.

I used the data reset function over the iTunes restore, as I sort of thought that just removing user data would be less harmful than trying to do anything to the firmware. wrong!!

I did try 4.2.1...and when that did not work, I then tried the earlier firmwares.

You are right about the Hosts file.

I saw a thread about modifying it and thought I would give it a try...only to find it had already been modified and the old apple entry had be rem'd out ...I did not thing of going backwards and removing the modified entry.

I think it was pwnage that would have modified the hosts on the Mac

Checked the iTunes version and it is the latest.

Did try a few things with Tiny Umbrella but no joy there either. Will jsut have to keep playing and see what happens

Any opinion on this site and their software

Pwnagetool does NOT modify the hosts file. It wasn't this.

TinyUmbrella should be able to tweak the hosts file back into shape with the instructions I gave.

Geohot wrote a great article back in the day - roughly titled "why you should never pay for unlock or jailbreak". It disappeared when he took down his iPhone hacking blog. I've not been able to find a better article that explains why you should avoid sites that make grand claims regarding unlock/jailbreak and ask for payment.

My opinion is you are always going to find trusted solutions at Chronic Dev Blog , Greenpois0n.com , http://blog.iphone-dev.org , iH8sn0w.com , The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella (links in no particular order)

Everything else is a either a scam or a third rate rip off of the hard work of these guys

    Thanks for those other links
I will have a read up there.
I had the same opinion of these pay for sites..but wanted to check...I e-mailed them and did not get any reply...and that is when I am asking about their software BEFORE I BUY...so one can only imagine what there 'after sales' service would be like if they cant even answer a sales enquiry

I had to go away with work for a few days, so dropped the phone back to my mate I got he phone from, so he could have a go while i was away and unable to do anything ..he has not got anywhere either and since I am back he has told me he has passed it on to someone else...Wanted to be able to crack this myself really...but happy if I get it back working again too

Well it is up and running again with 4.2.1..but it is oh so slow..even with all of Spotlight searches turned off
Would like to maybe go back to an earlier firmware but am afraid I may brick it again.

I did not get it restored, my mate did..and he is very vague about what he did...being very secretive about it..not that he charged me or anything .

I have other questions, but may start a new thread with a relevant topic
Cheers for all the input guys

OS wise, an iPhone 3G can always be downgraded to iOS 3.1.x
baseband wise, depending on what you/your friend did to the baseband, extremely new basebands probably won't work in iOS 3.x and generally baseband can't be downgraded on an iPhone 3G or 3GS (unless you own a very very old iPhone 3G - and we are talking about a fraction of a percentage of 3G iPhones sold in the first 2-4 weeks of the 3G launch in the USA in June/July 2008)

If you friend turned on custom backgrounds and multitasking that can really slow things down on the 3G.
Only SMS text message history searching via spotlight needs to be turned off in spotlight (and this is disabled in 4.2.1 by default anyway) the rest of spotlight wasn't a huge drag on the CPU.

How would I tell if there is multi tasking? will that be the double tap on the home button same as the iTouch4? if so, then no...no multitasking..and I miss that ...think I may have to sell this on, bite the bullet and pay for a new iphone 4...or wait for the new 5 to appear
