Angry iPhone battery useless after 300 charges

Apple and AT&T are the target of a second class-action lawsuit over claims the two companies failed to tell the first iPhone buyers that annual fees of more than $100 would be needed to replace the iPhone battery and maintain service.
Filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California by Sydney Leung, the suit seeks more than $5m in compensatory and punitive damages. A court conference on the matter was set for November 28.

The nine-page complaint was filed on behalf of Leung by Oakland-based attorney H. Tim Hoffman, and argues that Apple and AT&T committed fraud by not fully informing customers about the costs and procedures for replacing the battery. The complaint argues that the battery "must" be replaced after 300 charges, anticipating a replacement at one year or less by a qualified technician, since the battery sits inside a sealed compartment.

A similar class-action suit was filed by Jose Trujillo of Melrose Park, Illinois in July.

Leung purchased two iPhones for $599 (300) each on June 29 in San Francisco, the first day they went on sale, and was required to agree to a two-year service plan with AT&T. Leung "was not informed at the time of purchase of the costs and procedures for replacing the battery," the suit says. The suit seeks answers to whether Apple and AT&T "should have known that the time and expense of replacing the iPhone battery would affect initial sales of the iPhone".

Apple did not respond immediately to the lawsuit, and AT&T said it would not comment.

In its defence, Apple has stated on its website that the lithium-ion battery when properly maintained will hold up to 80 percent of its full charge at 400 charge and discharge cycles.

Also, Apple covers replacement of the battery for a full year and also has a protection plan for $69 for two years of repair coverage for the iPhone including the battery.

Replacing a battery out of warranty costs $79, plus $6.95 for shipping.

In early July, a consumer watchdog group, the Foundation for Taxpayers and Consumer Rights, urged Apple to spell out its battery replacement policy for prospective buyers.

They wont win jack on that classaction, they dont seem to understand the line on how after 300charges it aint dead, its still 80% life and drops from there, it will take a good 500-600 cycles before its useless. Not to mention how many batteries in cell phones do you know that will last more than 2-3yrs of continuous use without dying? Most of the manufacturers charge like $50-75 for a batter (yes you can replace it yourself) but cost wise aint much different given that Apple will replace it for you. Im sick of these battery threads. To me its like if you dont agree with it, then dont buy one. Apple had to enclose the battery to get the design it wanted. Try to design this phone with a removeable battery cover, think about it hard and design it, you will realize you will have to make the entire case thicker by a few mm's to get a true battery cover concept. Apple is about form and function, thats what they did.

Yeah, I don't get this either. It's not as if the information on the battery wasn't readily available before the iPhone even went on sale.

plus its 300 FULL cycles... topping the battery off every night isnt a full cycle... so if you are at 1/2 battery at the end of the day it should last you about 2 years until it gets to 80% capacity!!!

It's clearly an opportunistic lawsuit. Certain breeds of the US legal profession thrive on ambulance chasing like this.

But that "300 cycles until 80%" isn't set in stone either (and it's more like 400-500 if it's treated right). Some tips I've collected for getting the most out of the Lithium Ion polymer type battery used in the iPhone:

    1. They don't like to be either fully charged or fully discharged.

It would be hard to overcharge an iPhone battery as Apple's charger is smart enough to switch off when done, but keep in mind (especially when hacking) constantly plugging and unplugging into your computer to apply patches, as it charges when on a USB cable:

    BAD: 100% ... unplug, use for a few minutes ... 98% ... plug in, apply more patches ... 100% ... unplug ... 98% ... plugin ... 100% ...
BETTER: apply all patches at once ... 100% ... unplug ... use for a day or two ... 30% ... plug in

    And don't "mini-cycle" too often:

    BAD: 90% ... plug in for morning's work ... 100% ... unplug for lunch ... 95% ... plug in for afternoon ... 100% .... unplug for dinner ... 95% ... plugin for evening computer stuff ... 100% ... unplug for night
BETTER: use for a day or two ... 20% ... plugin to charge ... 100% ... use for day or two

Don't accidentally fully discharge and leave it discharged for a while:

BAD: 20% ...leave unused for a few days ... 0% ... left empty for a few days before charging
BETTER: 20% ... charge up before you need to use it again

    2. They don't like to be either too hot or too cold

BAD: leaving in car glovebox, while car is sitting in summer sun
    BETTER: take it with you

BAD: charging it in a leather case
BETTER: take it out of a case to charge

BAD: getting it out to use first thing on a cold winter's day
BETTER: put it in a body pocket and leave to warm up, keep it near comfortable room temperature (70F / 21C)

    3. Don't drain more power than you need

BAD: Bluetooth on when you don't need it?
BETTER: switch off radio transmitters you aren't using in Settings

BAD: Brightness set to max in a dark room?
BETTER: auto-brightness with slider in mid position does a good job

    Other tips?

The thing is that they knew about this shit and didn`t inform us about it. The same issue was with iPod (2 Years ago).

And i say it`s not so a big problem for me if i know it before, if i buy an iphone and the seller tells me that, i can decide to not buy an iphone for fucking 700 euros! ( because of the Ipod shit i decided to wait that time and my desicion was right!)

And what apple say about that it`s after 300 cycles only 80% of capacity - there`re a many people they say it`s NOT going any more after that. So they wanna let decide the lawyer about.
Like 2 Years ago with ipod and then say me it`s not all about the money.

I like Apple, but i`m really pissed off with big companies they`re getting money from hard working people for only shit.

So i tell you i`ll never buy hardware from Apple except they show us that they produce for the people and not only for the money.
Ass well i would never buy crappy software from Microsoft.

Before Apple was really good stuff and you could see that they really wanna make the people contently. Expensive, but Good.
Now they start like microsoft and as long they act like them only for the money as long they`re for me in the same pot.

Sorry for my goddamn crappy english!

Geeeezzz - sure, you are right.

Better save your money for basic math class (e.g. "money conversion") and some hours therapy... But be aware, a hour of therapy may cost you hard earned money

Hey Qubeat, for maximum value for your hard working s***, I recommend you buy a ZunePhone. Your rants are almost as funny as this:

But not quite! (First YouTube video I've ever watched 5 times in a row because it is so well done.)
