I've come by an iPhone 3GS that has supposedly never been used.

Right now, I'm using an old RAZR. I am on an Cingular/AT&T family package, unlimited data plan.

For the past couple days, I've been looking into how to get this existing service on my new iPhone. I haven't even turned it on yet, out of fear of SOMETHING happening. But from jailbreaking to unlocking to PwnageTool to Redsnow, I am at my wit's end as to what I should do. There is so much conflicting information, and things I don't know and things I'm assumed to know that I've been left completely overwhelmed and exasperated. I don't know what I should do.

I don't understand what having an old bootrom means. I don't understand what "Spirit" is, or what "IPSW" is. I'm actually very tach-saavy, but only on computers. Phones are just nonsense to me.

The worst part is that there's no "where do I start" tutorial or anything on how to do all this. Even trying to make this thread, there are so many different forums that I don't know where to even ASK how to begin!

Plugin your iPhone, if iTunes opens, just cancel any alerts it displays and quit/shutdown iTunes
Download and run The Firmware Umbrella
TinyUmbrella should detect your iPhone and determine the OS version, baseband version and model number, make a note of these.
While you are there, click "save my SHSH" - this is useful for the future.

Identify old or new bootrom.
