Iphone 3G iOS4.2.1 BB 5.15.04 stuck in Recovery mode afterjailbreaking and unlocking
This is my first iphone.
I just got it a couple days ago and needed to jailbreak and unlock it so I could use it with tmobile.
So I jailbroke it using redsnow, that seemed to work fine. Then I unlocked it by updating (or so I thought), to BB 6.15. So far so good, I was making phone calls with my tmobile sim from the iphone and listening to music on it, the only thing that didn't work was the wi-fi, but that was already an issue when the former owner updated to 4.2.1.
So then I tried the freezer fix to see if it would help my wi-fi because enough people had claimed it worked for me to feel like it was worth a try. 10 minutes in a ziploc bag in the freezer then tried to use wireless.
Wireless didn't work still, no surprise, but what did surprise me was that the ipod function quit working correctly and would go back to home screen when I'd try and select 'artists' or 'songs'.
So I tried powering the phone off and then back on. Unfortunately it would not go pass the apple logo.
So I started trying things like rejailbreaking and so on. I've tried downgrading to iOS 4.1 but didn't work.
Now it's stuck in recovery mode I think, it's got the usb cord, arrow and itunes logo on the screen. I've tried tiny umbrella to kick it out to no avail. It seems like the phone is semi-bricked, but I'm new to apple so maybe wrong term? Anyway, I don't care about saving data or anything I just want to end up with a functioning tmobile cell phone that I can play mp3's on. I don't need the phone to do anything else except text. Is there anyway to recover this phone and start fresh? It would be nice to get back to a firmware where the wi-fi works, but that's just a bonus not a necessity. Thanks for any help, I'm confused, frustrated and overwhelmed and wishing I had gone with a smartphone from LG or something like that. Please help me!
Read up on SHSH -- they are the keys required in order to restore a jailbreakable and unlockable 4.x firmware to that device right now. Without an SHSH, you can ONLY go to 5.0.1, and that is a tethered/semi-tethered jailbreak. Since you have 06.15.00 (iPad baseband), you can still unlock on 5.0.1, it just requires you to replace the CommCenter on the phone with a patched one from 5.0.0, else you'll just show no service.
Since it's stuck in recovery and you can't get out, step one is to download TinyUmbrella, plug the phone in, and attempt to save all SHSH from both Cydia and from the standard server. This will let you know what your options are with regard to any 4.x firmwares you can safely restore back to. If none are saved, then you will need to go to 5.0.1.
In order to go to 5.0.1, you'll need to make a custom firmware without the baseband update (redsn0w or PwnageTool) so that it will successfully complete the restore. If you ever attempt to restore a standard baseband to an iPhone with a 06.15 baseband, you WILL bootloop the device and you won't be able to use it until you restore (the situation you're currently in). This is all clearly documented on the dev-team's site with regard to the iPad baseband, I recommend you give it a review even though you weren't the one who upgraded it -- it makes big changes to how you can deal with your device from an upgrade perspective in the future and reading it will stop anything like this from happening again in the future.
