My iPhone 3G 16GB is stuck in recovery, i've downloaded a lot of programs to try get it out but it doesn't seem to help. I was given this iPhone from my dad who got it from his brother who lives in the United States, so I wouldn't call it new. I am using windows vista 32 bit and my software was 4.2.1

Programs I have downloaded:
- iREB 4.0.x-4.1-RC2
- redsn0w_win_0.9.664b
- libusb-1.0.8
- iRecovery (which was a waste because it just kept closing)
- RecBoot
- blackra1n

I've followed countless walkthroughs and tutorials yet none of them seem to do the trick. I think I am using the programs right, though I hope i'm not so there's hope that I can fix this without getting it repaired which my friend said costs $100.

When I try to restore it on iTunes, I get different errors for different walkthroughs which are:
- 1015
- 21
- 1611

When I tried using recboot to kick it out of recovery mode, the command prompt kept saying
recovery_connect_callback
recovery_disconnect_callback
recovery_connect_callback
recovery_disconnect_callback
recovery_connect_callback
recovery_disconnect_callback
etc

My iPhone would keep going from recovery to the logo whilst it was happening.

For a while it was stuck on emergency, but now it's back to recovery, and i'm desperate for help.
Any ideas would be great, thanks in advance

Put it into DFU mode http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm, try and restore to stock iOS 3.1.3 http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm and if that fails - publish the restore log on a paste-site. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm

Thanks, I managed to downgrade it to 3.1.3 although now it is stuck on emergency calls only with the background looking like recovery mode and apparently it needs a proper sim. This iPhone is from America, so I was wondering whether is there a way to get around buying a sim to activate it, perhaps a program?

Do you have any SIM card at all? One you can borrow for a short while?

If so.. insert the SIM card.. and then follow this guide:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.2, 3.1.3 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

That should jailbreak and hacktivate your phone.

Then you can remove the SIM card and use it as an iPod touch.

Or if you want to unlock.. That is possible too, but because you went to 4.2.1 and updated the baseband, you need to do some extra steps to defeat this.
