iPhone 2G not able to recover out of DFU
In a last act of desperation a friend of mine gave me his, obviously dead, iPhone 2G.
The problem is that it is just discovered as a Apple Mobile Device in DFU Mode. It is not possible to turn it on. The only lifesign it shows is when I try to recover the phone. The screen goes on and after a short while, the apple logo is shown. But about 10-15 seconds later, the screen turns off, leaving the last projected image slightly viewable for a few seconds.
iTunes quits the process giving me either error 1618 or 1604.
I already tried several versions of iTunes and the respective firmwares (1.1.4 - 3.0b5). I also tried this procedure on three different computers, including Windows and Macintosh-machines.
I have absolutely no idea what I can do anymore.
Please help me
btw, it's a 2G iPhone legitemately bought in Germany.
Did you try to put the iPhone into DFU mode? If the hardware is ok this should always work.
Make sure to have latest iTunes installed
Connect iPhone and Mac/PC
Shutdown iTunes if running or starting up
Shutdown the iPhone by holding Home and Start/Sleep until the screen goes black, let go of both buttons
Hold Home and Start/Sleep for 10 seconds (counting 100, 200, 300,...)
Let go of Start/Sleep but keep holding Home - keep holding...
...after 15-20 seconds iTunes should start up automatically, keep holding Home
iTunes will see an iPhone in recovery mode, let go of Home
If the iPhone's screen is black = DFU mode
Hit Restore in iTunes and restore to Apple stock firmware 2.2.1 - this should work

Well, the problem is, that the phone already is in DFU-mode and it doesn't get out of it. The only time the phone shows some signs of life is when I try to recover an original firmware. As soon as I try to put a custom firmware onto the device, the screen stays black and iTunes gives me the 1600.
In the meantime I was able to talk to the friend of mine who gave me the phone. He said, that he flashed a custom firmware and everything went well. But as soon as the battery was completely drained, the device didn't response anymore and got into the above mentioned state.
I have pretty much the same problem, but with my iPhone 3G. Whenever I turn it on, it is stuck on the Steve recovery icon, and iTunes can't restore it. Here is the output from iRecovery's postenv command:
config_board = 'n82ap'
loadaddr = '0x9000000'
boot-command = 'fsboot'
idle-off = 'true'
boot-device = 'nand0'
boot-partition = '0'
boot-path = '/System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/kernelcache.s5l8900x'
display-color-space = 'RGB888'
display-timing = 'optC'
P bootdelay = '0'
P backlight-level = '46'
P platform-uuid = <DATA>
P auto-boot = 'false'
image-version = '0x3'
framebuffer = '0xfd00000'
secure-boot = '0x1'
did you try to press and hold both the sleep button and the home button together until you see the screen turn on? that usually worked for me in the past.
