I had this problem on 2 of my phones, and strangely enough it was the camera. I opened both up and had to clean the contacts and remount the cameras. Might wanna try it.

Thanks for your help NeoFiberOptikz. However, I am not too keen on opening my phone... In any case, I really am skeptical about this solution, as the phone clearly had more crashes with firmware 2.2.1, and none with firmware 1.1.4. I have now restored to 2.2 and the problem still occurs, sometimes after a few days, and sometimes more than once in a short time (as it happened this evening; twice in a few hours). I don't have any problem with the camera.
Any other idea/solution?
Thanks a lot.
PS: How do you actually open your iphone, clean contacts, remount cameras, etc. anyway???

I still have this problem. I am now on 3.1.3 and have tried everything, restoring many times from fw 2.0 up to now, never solving this problem. I recently installed Insomnia, which actually stopped this "coma" or "deep sleep" problem, but drains my battery a lot. It is a bit like renaming the file com.apple.SystemPowerProfileDefaults.plist, as the phone never goes to full sleep, which therefore suggests that it is a software problem, not hardware, and that it should be possible to fix.
Please could someone help?
Thanks
