I just bought a new iphone from a friend, and I already have an existing contract with ATT/Cingular. However, imagine my surprise when I attempted to activate my iPhone on itunes and it told me that I had to add on the data plan for 20 bucks a month rather than change my voice plan, but with a little twist. On the bottom of the screen, in fine print, it is written that a 2 year contract is required on all plans.

So I called into customer service, and the representative told me that because I bought an iphone, regardless of how I purchased it, I had to sign a 2 year contract in order to use it, even if my current contract doesnt allow iPhone's voice and data plan because it is a business plan. By signing up for a data plan, I amrenewing my old plan for another two years, whether I liked it or not.

Essentially, according to the customer rep, in order to use an iPhone, I need to sign a 2 year contract, regardless of what that contract is, as long as its two years. I can't just add the data plan for the remainder of my contract, and when that ends, call it quits.

Fortunately, I believe in loopholes, and there HAS to be a loophole in this outrageous system.

Help guys? Is there anything I can do to avoid a 2 year contract?

u dont have to add that stupid $20 plan they just want to F u.. i have the same thing but i went and got me a gophone sim/ prepaid from att
and it works perfectly fine, no contract no nothing
edit: oh and if you want to get the gophone no contract then they will ask you what phone you have, DONT tell them u have an iphone
they want you to pay more money! just tell them you have some other phone like a Razr.. works for me

I'm not sure I understand. Don't I still technically need to activate it via Itunes? Which sends me through the whole process of forcing me to add the data plan, and forcing me to add a 2 year contract?

oh, if u dont want the 2 year contract and data plan you have to Unlock your iphone....
then you can be free to use what ever u want.. its simple

SO with the gophone thing, I don't unlock, I just use their gophone service. But how do I get a data package?

u fisrt have to unlock your phone, u cant use it untill u unlock..
it has a data plan. u can add a data plan for less then the $20 and its just the same.. i dont use it i just use the wifi.. free
