why would an apple engineer go to the effort to unlock an iphone to test if new software breaks it and then advertise it to some kid.
    doesn't make sense.
Updates do not have to follow a logical numbering convention.

They could have run internally other updates but not release them to the public for whatever reason.

An Apple engineer would not have to go to any trouble to unlock any iPhone to know if the new software would break the unlock because he would already know that the new software would be such that AT&T is a main feature in how the iPhone operated, and that the new software would wipe clean away everything old when run.

Why not advertise to some kid? If I knew of a close friend whose youngest boy loves his unlocked iPhone I would whisper in his ears.

Don't forget, George Hotz was probably thought of as a snotty-nosed kid who didn't know what he was saying/doing. Then he posted his unlock and became a celebrity. Are kids not capable of credibility?

Not when "credible experts" are on this forum a dime a dozen. Everyone should enjoy their unlocked iPhone and cross the bridge of potential problems. Everyone should have a say on this forum but not fill with BS like the first poster is.

true, but apple has to make it seem like they're trying to stop it otherwise att would be upset and cry a river.

what you say is true, but do you really think he would refer to a senior data\communications\software engineer (whatever his title) as 'apple expert'.

Don't you think from previous discussions, this kid would have referred to our forum as his main source of info for his unlocking escapade, and then hold off on jeopordising his sources job by giving away the info. (maybe)....knowing his source would also read theses boards.

either way, i am willing to bet cash the info is not true....lets be honest with ourselves here.

The whole 1.1.1 thing is based on the mockup on the Apple Store credit page. https://supportform.apple.com/200709/main?id=qp

    Look carefully:

The version number is 1.1.1, but the IMEI is 12 123456..., and the ICCID is 1234 1234...

Do you think maybe the graphic designer was just making up some of the numbers?!

But the modem firmware number may be real, which implies a baseband update, which will probably break the unlock.

Who can answer this question !?

I read the whole topic BUT are we all afraid that it's gonna brike the iphone or that it will lock again, so no softwareunlock anymore ... OR is the update gonna stop the jailbreaking/activation so Hardware unlock/hyper card iphones can't update too ?

(Srry for Bad English) Many tnx ...

    Time will tell.

Chances are that unless Apple decides to play very aggressive (and risk everyone being so angry they'll never buy an Apple product again), then:

When Apple updates the firmware, ALL hacked iPhones (even just iFuntastic) will need a Restore, as modified firmware fails iTunes' checksum which automatically prompts a Restore type of update.

However, iNdependence, iAsign, etc, should still work but may need just a simple update from the wonderful Dev Team.

If Apple updates the baseband slightly to fix bugs, then the unlock (both software and hardware) may need to be done again with revised code.

However, if Apple changes the baseband a lot, and makes the unlock method harder to apply, then a new one will have to be discovered.

So, really the more you've hacked the phone, all the way up until unlocking, the more dangerous a new firmware update will be.

I guess we'll find out next week...

I dont even see a point in them locking it considering it would just be hacked again.

Plus i believe this poster is full of shit. I dont doubt a update would break things though.

I thought apple had a neutral stance on installing 3rd party software...
