Sad to say, but not everything on the iphone is that great
And, from what Ive read it can also not delay a data connection in favour of an incoming call.
to be very honest, whilst the interface is awesome, the phone itself is pretty basic in what it can do... the simple stuff that it can do, i agree is done brilliantly.. but that's about it. the big 3 gsm phone makers are a country mile ahead in functionality.

i think apple has it's work cut out being up against n0kia and m0t0r0la... the former already has a touch screen on the way and there are tons of free interface designs out there.. i'm sure it won't be long before they come up with some nice minimalist interface as well.

at least you guys in the states are seeing the light in terms of how good gsm is.

hope i don't get banned from the forum for posting negative remarks about the hallowed iphone :-D

Well, guys, I do not have the problem you have! I have just tried it out - the iphone cancels the data transfer (e.g. checking e-mails, yahoo maps, etc) and transfers the call thru. Maybe because I have turned off my voicemail?

Are you in US? What do you mean turned off Voicemail? Through the provider, or some iPhone setting?

Nope - I am in Austria.

I have turned off my voicemail (called my provider to do that). caller will get e.g. a busy ring tone, or a message recorded saying that I cannot be reached, or a free - never ending - ring tone

Okay, thats close to where I am, and I am sure most EU mobile service providers are on a pretty similar standard.

What happens when you have your Voice mail turned off? The call comes in and the EDGE is dropped? That is how it should work but most handsets lets you choose this as an option.

On the other hand, I just dont see how a Sevice could modify the phones behaviour. I mean weather you have voicemail or not, EDGE should be always dropped. Maybe its something with the Visual Voicemail? Obviously we dont have that here though.

Okay, so we just need to gather than more people and experiences from other countries, and see whats the deal here. I will test mine in a week or so, when my phone gets here, and with little luck, if I am able to unlock it.

    Cheers

No 2,5G (EDGE/GPRS/GSM) phone is supporting Data + Voice at the same time, as both are using the same network resources. But this doesn't matter, as data is usually transfered in several blocks (e.g. http-requests on the web) - and the voice transmission can interrupt the data transmission between these gaps.

I made a test and called my iPhone from another handset, while browsing the internet on the iPhone - and the data transmission was interrupted by the call. This worked also fine while watching YouTube-videos - which causes huge data transfer.

So may be the problem with the blocked calls is related to the particular network the iPhone was booked in.

You have to wait until the 3G (UMTS) version of the iPhone is released to have simultaneous support for voice and data.

I'm on Vodafone in germany, and no call's coming through when using google maps or checking my mail for example. No call. Everything goes straight through to the mailbox.

The Nokia N95 i used before (and eventually will be using AGAIN) always paused any data connection when a voicecall arrived. So, it doesn't seem to be a network problem per se...
