I never get an engaged or busy signal - just "Call failed"
If the person I'm calling it on the line, my iPhone simply displays the "Called failed" message instead of a engaged or busy tone. I'm on an unlocked 1.1.2 using Vodafone UK.
Anyone else have this problem? Doesn't the iPhone have an auto redial option?
That's pretty poor. Practically every other phone I have owned has had an auto redial option. Also, how am I supposed to know if the number is bad/faulty or is simply busy.

sadly this is 'Normal' for an Iphone ... currently it does not differentiate call failure cases by the 'Release Codes' sent by the network. This applies when you call someone who is busy or rejects your call or the call doesn't go through. Release codes are sent for each of these cases and can tell you if a call failures was due to a problem in the network, etc
Sad to see the Iphone doesn't take any of these into consideration and erroneously lets us know the 'CALL FAILED'!
As an telecom engineer, if carriers/operators considered a user busy to be a call failure, we would be hanged and what not for failing to meet a basic KPI!
As good as the Iphone is from a usability perspective, it is still far behind in terms of very basic features as compared to even the cheapest phones on the market.
so many examples:
SMS reception from operator #s (still not quite right even in 1.1.2)
Multiple SMS recipients
OTA settings (Yes i understand the phone is locked to a particular operator but still! at least have OTA time sync when you are roaming!)
