I bricked d the 3g Once...will Tiny Umbrella save me if it happens again?
Hi Guys
Am new to iPhones, just got an unlocked 3G the other day, and because I knew it was unlocked, and understood the 'dangers' of doing a iTunes restore or upgrade...so used the internal 'Clear user data reset' instead...assuming that it wold be safer.
Well, as you lot probably already can guess...it was not..and it then would not even boot.
Tiny Umberlla, iTunes, pwnage..all gave the 3g as no firmware, no serial, no serial etc..and iTunes would not do anything to restore it...any firmware install came back as 'unsuitable'
So anyway..my mate restored it..but wont tell me how..or is very vague He actually got someone else to do it and is not sure himself what tool was used.
From Tiny Umbrella,
It is now:
Device :MB046LL/A - iPhone3G
Firmware : 4.2.1
Baseband : 06.15.00 - 6.2_M3S2
It has Cydia and ultrasn0w installed
What I want to know is will the Tiny Umbrella backed up SHSH file save me if I do attempt any further messing with it? Would like to try going back to a lower (faster ) firmware.
Will restoring the SHSH file also restore Cydia and ultrasn0w unlock? or will that need to be done independently ?
Cheers

It isn't (as we have repeatedly said)

SHSH is relatively unimportant for the iPhone 3g. This is because only iTunes actually checks/enforces the SHSH - not the iPhone 3G itself.
On the 3GS and later, the hardware in the iPhone actually validates the flashed files are correctly SHSH signed during the subsequent boot - the 3G doesn't validate the SHSH part during boot.
You are confusing several very unrelated topics.
- There is nothing stopping you downgrading the Operating System (referred to as firmware by TinyUmbrella) to iOS 3.1.x (or lower)
- At the moment it is IMPOSSIBLE to downgrade the baseband from 06.15.00 to something lower
- I don't know if the 06.15.00 baseband will work with iOS 3.1.3 or lower (it might)
- Downgrading/upgrading/reinstalling the firmware always wipes Cydia and any items installed via Cydia (including ultrasn0w) - you need to jailbreak and reinstall these if you want them on your downgraded OS
- Read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm to understand the key differences between jailbreak/hacktivation and unlock.

How to report an iTunes restore/update fail in a useful manner

iPad 3G 64GB (4.3.3, Redsn0w) oldest SHSH 3.2.2
iPhone 4 32GB (4.2.1, Redsn0w JB-monte) oldest SHSH 4.1
iPhone 3GS 32GB (4.3.3; Pwnagetool) factory unlocked oldest SHSH 3.1
iPhone 8GB (3.1.3; Pwnagetool) AT&T Locked - Unlocked with bootneuter

Possible, but I did not think to go and check a hackintosh forum that I last used many months ago when I built up a hackintosh machine, to check to see if I coudl do a dat reset on an iphone. I have not been active at all in computing for the last 14 months or so..High powered electric bikes are my current interest ( I lost my driving licence
)
Compared to a firmware restore or upgrade, it seems like a safe thing to do

So is there a way ..without iTunes ..to do a full backup of the unit..baseband, user data Firmware ...all in one 'backup my iPhone operation'...any software out there that can do that..so if there is a next time...I can simply return to my backup...and have firmware/jailbreak/basebanc/activation/apps etc all restored

the reason I ask about returning to a lower firmware is that it is painfully slow quite quickly, often needing a hard reset once or twice a day and a few searches I have done recommend removing some or all of the spotlight searches and possible going to a lower firmware.
I see where you get that impression that I am confusing the issues..but I thingk that is mroe to how I phrased the question rather than confusion..I am aware fo the differences...jsut not so aware of what and how Tiny umbrella worsk when it does the backup...hence the question

The only thing I may be confused about is ..is just installuing ultrasn0w the unlock...or is that only part of it ( after Cydia first of course)
