I bought a US 1.1.2 OTB
Hi, I bought a US 1.1.2 out the box iphone last week which comes with the AT&T sim in.
I downgraded to 1.1.1 using a mac os lepoard, Jailbroke with independance
Went through the steps to update to 1.1.2 then jailbroke again.
Great I'd got a working Ipod touch!
But I did think I would be able to use O2 in the UK. As i had read loads of posts and from the few answers I had come accross I believed it possible to use an O2 sim in. As the process and bootloaders were the same on the US and euro phones. I assumed it the bypass and activation allowed me to use any DEFAULT carrier.
Should I of put an O2 sim in before jailbreaking etc?
If its possible to get the US iphone working on O2 can somone help me please?
Advise me where I have gone wrong.
Thanks Kevin

From what I understand, you can use iTunes 7.5 to activate a US phone in the UK. This will tie you to an 18 month contract, but you can use then use any o2 SIM card (not just the one that you used to activate the phone).
A better bet would be to get a TurboSIM, which will allow you to use any SIM without the need for a software unlock. In th UK, you don't even need to use the iWorld application to prevent the SMS and Phone apps from crashing (under 1.1.2).
There's plenty of stuff on how to get and use TurboSIMs in these forums, so I won't repeat it here.

Hmm, it *should* work with the O2 SIM- no need to sign up to any contracts at all. I assume you've made it to the springboard?
Are you sure your O2 SIM is active (eg not a defunct PAYG or contract one)? I assume you've restarted the phone?
If you can't make this work, maybe it is telling us that there's something different about the US vs UK phone. I find this hard to believe though

Hi, The springboard I take it to mean all the icons you can access text, calendar, photos etc YES i have got it all working appart from the O2 bit. I can see the different carriers in the settings. Restarted the iphone with an o2 sim in no joy.
Not sure whats gone on as it all went perfect with the jailbreak and activations.
Should this of been done with the O2 sim in or would it not matter?
Also when I first had itunes see the phone it wanted bought up the AT&T activation page.
Anyone confirm success with US 1.1.2 OTB activated using O2 UK?
Thanks Kevin

Don't think it matters what SIM you have in it when you do the JB procedure. Your O2 SIM works OK in another phone? Can you get your hands on another O2 sim just in case that's where the problem is?
Bit of a clutching at straws, but could try installing iWorld and selecting UK

Hi, Have tried two different O2 sims and no joy. (Both the sims were my works business contract phones) dont know if that makes a difference. I will try iworld but im not near wifi at the mo.
If anyone else has had a US 1.1.2 OTB working on O2 give me a shout please.
Maybe I should restore to 1.1.1 any try again?
thanks Kevin

hi kev69r,
i read your post carefully and from what i understand, you did jailbreak and activate your US iphone. but you did not mention anything about unlocking it. i think that's what you're missing. unfortunately, as of right now there is still no way to unlock the OTB 1.1.2.
for more info about this, you can read this post:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17490
to put things in a clearer perspective, activating the iphone literally means activating the unit to be able to start using it (with ATT / O2 / Orange / Vodaphone), to jailbreak means to be able to open up the iphone for 3rd party app installations, and unlocking means unlocking the phone's baseband to be able to use it with other carriers around the world. if your unit was using FW 1.1.1, you would be able to unlock and upgrade the FW to 1.1.2 while still maintaining the unlocked state. but OTB FW 1.1.2 sadly has no solution yet.
i hope this had shed some light on your problem.

It's an oob 1.1.2 phone, you can't unlock it, and shouldn't need to to use an O2 sim. I'll give this some more thought to see if we can come up with a solution for you

I'm pretty certain that a US iPhone can be activated to work on o2 in the UK. Certainly, when I insert my o2 SIM in my unactivated (I just installed 1.1.2) US iPhone, then iTunes recognises this fact and wants to begin the UK o2 signup process.
I'm fairly certain that the activation process is able to alter the SIM lock from AT+T to o2, just as the activation process can also unlock the T-Mobile SIM free handsets (for a price).
It seems to me that the original poster believed that an OOTB US iPhone would have SIM locks set such that a SIM from any of the official providers (T-Mobile, AT+T, Orange or o2) would work in his US iPhone. I don't believe this is true. A US iPhone will, by default, be restricted to AT+T SIMs unless this is changed during the activation process.
Personally, I'm using a TurboSIM with my handset, and 1.1.2 works just fine with my o2 and Vodafone SIMs. Until an unlock for phones with the 4.6 bootloader is found, I think this is the best you can do.

well this problem has been talked about in numerous threads... now we for sure know that any us phone with 1.1.2 could be activated with an 02 sim on the contract... but what we dont know is weather it will work or not.. you might be able to activate but after your get into the springboard after the phone is activated it might say invalid sim and you will have an 02 contract without an iphone...or the phone might relock itself to a different carrier.. or it might unlock itself so it would be compatible with att and 02... thats just a speculation and nobody knows since nobody in europe likes going on contracts.. unlike in the north america.. everything is on contracts here.. and you do get a way better deal than pay as you go so i dont see a point of not signing up on a contract...
this issue is very important to me.. as i already said in my previous posts about this issue is that im in Canada and already on rogers contract.. rogers is the company thats suppose to be getting iphones (god knows when though).. but i really dont mind resigning for another 2 year deal if they give me unlimited data for a decent price.. so the question still remains weather the phone will be useable on a different legal network but bought in a different country... im sure if its unlocked it will be fine.. you will just have to go through the activation process in itunes...but if its bought in the states and used in europe or canada or anywhere else where its supported does it have to be bought in those countries and those countries only
