How to update jailbroken iPhone (1.1.4) without losing any sms?
I want to update my jailbroken iPhone, which has version 1.1.4 of the software, and I wish to do this without losing any of my text messages (sms), because some of them are very important to me. Also, if possible, I would like to keep my notes.
Does anyone have a solution?
I use a Macbook with Leopard, and I have the latest version of iTunes. If anyone suggests that I can use Syphone to back up my sms, I'm gonna tell you here and now that it's not possible, because for some reason the program crash every time I try to launch it, and so I can't use it.
Why not just use iTunes backup/restore feature?
Does that work with a jailbroken iPhone? And it backups SMS and notes? In that case, how do I do it? Could you tell me step by step, please?
Yes, it works with a jailbroken iPhone and it backs up pretty much anything that is not jailbreak-related (e.g., call history, notes, sms, notes, contacts, settings, etc.), except media that is synced through iTunes (music, photos, videos).
You can find backup and restore options in right-click menu of your iPhone that appears in the "Devices" section in iTunes.
However, before you start, what version are planning to upgrade to? 3.0? Because your current version is so old, the upgrade process might not be as smooth as to version 2.2.1, for example.

Okay, I've done that now, but it looks like it back ups automaticly. Does that mean that if I plug the phone in after it's restored, then it will overwrite the information from my iPhone then, and I will lose my previous backup?
Yes, now that I've seen what 3.0 can do I absolutely want to upgrade it to that version. Could something go wrong if I upgrade directly form 1.1.4 to 3.0? What if I first upgrade to 2.2.1 and then to 3.0?
Take into account that if you go from 1.1.4 to 3.0 your baseband will be updated, and you'll lose your unlock and activation.
Of course, if you're on official carrier, then just go ahead and update.
Otherwise you can wait until the Dev Team releases an unlock/jailbreak solution for 3.0 (should be very soon).
And don't worry about overwriting backups, because when iTunes detects a freshly restored iPhone it offers to restore most recent backup.
But just to be on the safe side, back up your backup You'll find it somewhere in a path similar to ~/Library/Apple Computer/MobileSync/Backup/<your-device-UDID> (I'm on Windows, so it's my best guess where it should be located).
How? How do I backup, and how do I transfer it back to the iPhone after I have restored and updated it?
Connect the iphone to iTunes and it will backup everything.

Updating from iTunes isn't an option for me as my net conxn is very slow.
I've successfully downloaded the first file :http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw
which is for my iPhone (1st generation jailbroken 1.1.4).
the 'iPhone1,1_3.0' part shows it is for iPhone OS 1.1.4.
I am yet to install it. I've also downloaded the Pwnage tool & UltrSn0w.
here's the whole url list with MD5 checksum :
hope this helps!!
