Call yourself from another phone. Leave yourself a voice message. Check your voicemail. Delete your message. The red circle should dissappear.

You have to dial a code, I can remember but you could search in the forum "voicemail" and it should be there.

    *5005*86*xxxxxxxxxxxx

the x's are your voicemail retrieval number in its FULL FORM. The shortened version you dial from your phone is usually *xx, but you've got to use the full one. For example in vancouver canada my full number is +1604416xxxx. The plus is necessary.

Call your provider if you dont know the number.

This sets the correct voicemail number but it doesn't remove the red dot. I take it there's no way to remove it?

try dialling into your voicemail and deleting any messages stored in there?
I used my voicemail number on manual dial (ooh had to tap the screen 3 times instead of 1, it was hard ) before I actually changed it via an AT minicom command as the *5005* dial wasn't out then.
I also got the red dot but once I cleaned out all the junk in my voicemail, it went away (I think)
