I just inadvertently deleted a group of message from my iPhone that has very important information in it. I had added a tremendous amount of information since I last backed the phone up probably last year, so I know the information won't be able to retrieved through a backup. Is there anyway to retrieve it otherwise?

As we know, every time you sync iDevice with iTunes, it will automatically make a backup of your iDevice contents including photos, SMS, reminders, contacts and more. Therefore, as long as you have ever synced your iPhone with iTunes, you can retrieve deleted text messages from iPhone.
Do not connect your iPhone to iTunes again until the messages are recovered. Otherwise, the old backup file will be overwritten by the current content on your iPhone. Once it happens, the deleted messages will be gone forever.

Unless you've got them synced or even backed as much as iTunes or even iCloud there isn't them any more. Those SMS can become recovered even if you've simply deleted them from your iPhone.
And below are something I think can be helpful for you to recover iPhone SMS after Factory Settings Restore.

    1. Make iTunes be automatically sync with iPhone.

    2. Link your apple iPhone to iTunes and back up by choosing Preferences > Back-up from apple iTunes, or proper-click on your own iPhone as well as choose support.

    3. Reinstate your iPhone simply by selecting Bring back under Choices. Note which restoring the particular iPhone may restore the prior iPhone firmware. Your apple iPhone will become completely removed after the brand new firmware is actually installed. Therefore make positive your back up is great!

    4. The last step will be to restore the iPhone in the back up you produced on step 2.

When you made the backup, you may have told it to encrypt the backup.

Therefore I used the normal iTunes backup and restore found under the Summary tab in iTunes with the help of iPhone Data Recovery. If your data is still on the other phone, back it up again with iTunes. To use iTunes you have to start it, connect your phone to the computer with a cable, then select the iPhone button near the top right corner of the screen. Be sure not to check the encrypt button.
