Default How POLL: How many of you have bricked your Iphones?

it seems like a ton of bricked Iphones flying about. Can you tell us where it went wrong and what error you get?

Maybe if we post it all in one long thread a recovery can be found...

While I'm not convinced my iphone is beyond revival... the story goes like this:

-Installed all the necessary tools following the guide on www.hacktheiphone.com
    -Took the iPhone apart
-Turned the iPhone on to make sure AutoLock was set to "Never" and that the WiFi was connected (per instructions).
-Phone said "Awaiting AT&T Activation" which Is weird because it was already fake activated
-Ignored the weird message and went make sure WiFi was still on only to realize it said "No Wifi" and i couldnt find a way to enable it.
-Reset the phone and it said something like "No calls in and out needs service"
-Read these forums and it was suggested to restore the phone via iTunes and start the process over
-Started restore through iTunes Software restore worked, firmware errored with "unknown error 1011" and the phone went in to recovery mode
-Nothing can connect to the phone but iTunes and iPHUC
-grestore never gets to the final part so that the phone can be jailbroken
-I've inspected all the connections that could have been hit and everything looks fine
-I can run iPHUC and do limited interaction but grestore never works like it should

It's important to note I NEVER got to the actual geohot method where you run ieraser or any of the other tools necessary.

I have exactly the same story and the same result (the "yellow triangle of death").

Considering that I too didn't get to the actual "needles part" of the hack (WiFi went dead after I installed AppInstall), I don't believe the phone is bricked. I'd like to think that if there was a way to restore the software WITHOUT using iTunes, it would pick up again.

Any thoughts would be VERY welcome...

I recovered an iPhone from what appeared to be death by giving it wall power for about half an hour to an hour...and then doing several hard resets. Sometimes the USB power isn't enough for some reason I can't explain. Other people have had the same experience. If iTunes if giving your error codes, or if you get stuck in the yellow triangle, give it a chance to rest on some honest to goodness AC.

    Exclamation Same here, semi-bricked phone

I second the notion that the unlocks gone awry are far from extraordinary:

As mentioned in the Hardware Needle Unlock thread, I also appear to have semi-bricked my iPhone.

Another thread counts a large amount of users having very similar problems, even before changing any software in the phone. As of this post, there is no consensus on the cause(s) for this behaviour. In my case:

    I ran
    Code:
    ieraser
    and
    Code:
    bbupdater -v
successfully, and proceded to set the needles with a friend. After typing iunlocker (with the needles in place) and hitting enter nothing happens, and the SSH connection to the phone is lost. No SFTP either. After that, an attempted full software restore in iTunes gives error 1602, after which the phone shuts off and neither iTunes nor the computer can even 'see' that the iPhone is attached. Attempted complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and Quicktime as suggested in this Apple support article to no avail.

iPhone will not start at all unless connected to the wall adapter, thus making a firmware reinstall impossible, since the USB port is being used by the adapter ---when it is removed to connect to the computer, the phone shuts off spontaneously. Also, with the phone connected to the adapter, I can force a reset, and get to the point where I see the yellow triangle, asking me to connect to iTunes, but that's where I'm stuck at.

Someone in IRC suggested keeping the phone on the dock, connected to the wall adapter for 48 to 72 hours, though this strikes me as odd, since the battery was fully charged last night, before becoming a brick.

Additionally, people at the above cited threads have suggested getting a new comm board from iFixit and installing it (problematic, since it is sold out and costs $149 USD), or sending the phone to Apple for the damaged parts to be restored ($249 USD for an 8GB iPhone, not really an option for those of us not in the US). Something tells me, however, that since the phone is still capable of showing the yellow triangle, a software solution might still be possible, without having to replace parts .

I will still try to restore from a Mac, as someone suggested, since I had been doing the unlock procedure on a PC (yes I did reinstall iTunes and all , but I am not holding my breath on the result.

Running out of ideas here... any help will be greatly appreciated.

Its dawned on me that there are quite a few people that have managed to get bricked (or semi bricked) iPhones that only show any signs of life if they are connected to the mains supply.

I had too had a bricked phone.

Mine died as one of the first (non geohot phones) to go part way through the hardware unlock. Mine also died without really doing anything severe like bricking the firmware with ieraser etc, I didn't get that far.

My symptoms were just a completely dead phone. Blank screen as if it was off and no way to get it to show any signs of life. I no longer have the phone so I never got the chance to see if it was one of these phones that do something if powered to the mains. Being in the UK, I never tried this by default either as the imported phones have the USA power supply, so all that stuff stays sealed in the box and have only ever used the dock!

Ok, so I finally get to the point of this message :-)

For those people that can get some sign of life through the mains but not through the dock, I'm thinking there must be a way to pull a pin on the USB high or something that makes the phone think it on the mains when indeed the USB is connected to the PC instead.

Perhaps then you can get some control back??

It might require some butchering of the USB to DOCK lead but that's gonna prove a small price to pay!

If you think about it, the mains supply is only serving power to the phone and it connects to the same USB lead that you would normally connect to your PC. So there can't be much going on there other than a pin being manipulated differently when in the mains adapter compared to the PC's USB Port!!

I'm leaving the iPaperWeight to rest in the cradle connected to the adapter as I write and will leave it so for a few hours, will report later on any developments.

Has anyone tried disconnecting the red cable that lead to the battery? Some people claim it has worked for them.

Also, could future posters clearly state what platform where you attempting to do the unlock in? I speculate there are more iBricks in the PC camp than in the Mac camp.
