Default How to optimize your battery performance

Hi, it is important for all the iPhone users to know some tips of how to make your battery last more

    1. Turn off wifi and bluetooth when you are not using them.
    2. Wifi uses less battery than EDGE, you must use Wifi instead of EDGE when you can
    3. Turn off mail Auto-Check, put it on manual, or change the auto-check values to more time
    4. Turn off push mail
    5. Equalizer on iPhone uses more battery so if you don't use it, turn if off
    6. You can also adjust brightness of the screen, or set it to auto-brightness
7 Always lock your iPhone when you are not using it, that would put it in standby, you can receive calls and messages in the standby mode.
    Use iPhone Regularly

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, itís important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month. (from apple web page)

you might wanna add open ssh as well. Switch that off it drains the battery as well significantly if kept running.

Hi, that also depends on the signal quality of your Wi-Fi connection, try turning off the Ask to Join Networks.
Also the battery performance depends of your carrier signal strength when you are using EDGE probably you have a better cellular Network connection than your Wi-Fi

for wifi, i think the phone is using more battery to scan for a network, than connecting/downloading from an already attached network. scanning happens when your wifi network signal is weak for when you move around. i say this because i have my wifi on and attach all day to home and office wifi and yet my battery last for 2+ days. if this is true then you should :
    1. turn off wifi when you're not using it or when you know there's no wifi network around
    2. use 'forget this network' for those unsecure network around your house that you don't use
this shall prevent your phone from scanning other networks unnecessary...just my 2 cents worth...

having said this, is there an option to turn off charging the iphone when syncing with itunes? i think this is really bad since the iphone is charged everytime we sync and especially for those who sync frequently. remember apple say the battery performance will degrade to 80% after 300-400 charges. in wm6, there's an option to turn this off when sync with activesync.

    Hello

For tip #4, what exactly is push mail?

And what is a charge cycle?

By the way -- another good tip is using Airplane mode. It's the first option under settings. This is for when you simply want to watch your videos or listen to your music. It doesn't keep the iPhone connected to a signal like it usually is, so you won't be able to use internet or anything like that.

push mail = imap pop e.g. yahoo pop when u pay $$$. normal yahoo is pull.
charge cycle = let your iphone almost flat out i.e. showing the critical battery sign and cannot turn, then charge it to full.
any comments on different between USB charging from notebook vs wall plug? i notice charging from wall plus is faster and more full...

With WiFi, the iPhone imho has a huge advantage over Windows Mobile phones: WiFi seems to be only enabled when the phone is switched on. WM devices were empty within hours, even when in standby, because WiFi was constantly active.

As for SSH, I've read that there's a significant difference between two different SSH implementations (probably like xinet.d vs. std. daemon on regular Linux). Not sure which ones exactly, I think OpenSSH was much better for the battery.

Regarding the charge-during-sync, that's something that I would find more interesting as well:

    • Does the battery get unusable after 2-3 years anyway, no matter how it is used (like with other Li-Ion batteries, e.g. in notebooks)?
    • Would more than just one full charge cycle per month increase the longlife?
    • While Apple writes about 400 full charges/discharges for those 80%, how much do partial charges count in?

Usually, on these battery topics, find any two experts and you'll get at least three opinions

In the end though, this is a mobile phone, and in two years when the battery gets weak, I bet 90% of iPhone users will already buy the next phone anyway.

just a note on wm6. i had a htc touch/elf and the battery is fantastic. its the same as iPhone, wifi is off when in sleep mode. ( the weather screen always say last updated x hours ago before u hit update ). i had wifi and activesync on all day at work and home, and it also last 2+ days as my iPhone, but don't forget the battery is smaller and lighter than iPhones. imho there's nothing to do with os/x or wm6, but rather the phone manucfacturer on how good they manage the battery.
