Default how to officially unlock AT&T iphone 2G after 3 years?

    hi,

I bought an iphone 2G in 2007 from apple in the US. I never signed a contract with at&t but unlocked my phone right from the beginning. So I went through all the different unlocking methods over the years.

some days ago i was wondering if its possible to unlock the phone officially? I heard that this is possible after 2 years. In Germany where I live, you have to go to a t-mobile shop and they will unlock your device after 2 years.

Im wondering how it works in the US. Since i cannot go to an at&t store...is it possible to officially unlock the phone with itunes? maybe just restore it and hook it up? I cannot try this at the moment because im not using the phone anymore but my sister.

    Thanks for your help

AT&T simply will not allow it - ever.

Apple wants to keep AT&T happy so they won't process unlocks for phones sold in the USA.

AT&T won't change their policies unless they are forced to. Residents of the USA need to write to AT&T, congress and vote accordingly to communicate how their 'democratic' system has been completely subsumed by lobbying from big business.

    Olethros, thanks for your answer.

I could just not believe that at&t is that strict

I Germany SIM locks are only allowed for 2 years after you have bought the phone. After 2 years your carrier has to unlock the phone. Anyway, even the 2 year SIM lock sucks.

Germany, like most of Europe has a reasonably balanced political system that is not heavily biased towards lobbying from big business. Plus they have a real competitive mobile telephony network - where one technology is used and the competitors compete on coverage, price, features etc.

The USA has multiple mobile telephone networks that are incompatible with each other. This means that each network can practice monopolistic techniques using the contract phone as the lock-in (as it is useless on any other network). Yet their government sees this as true capitalism, where the best network wins. Plus the government has struggled to make the same frequencies available as the rest of the world uses - making it even more difficult for mobile networks that were not invented in the USA to get a stronghold.

So without significant changes in regulation from the government, there is no legal or financial incentive for AT&T to stop playing so tough on phone lock-in. They know the only 3G market for their iPhones is overseas, so why allow unlocks? The only other US carrier where an iPhone will work is T-Mobile and that is 2G/EDGE only as their 3G frequencies are incompatible.

So why is there such a huge unlocking community if they cant use the phone anyway? Or are people here on hackint0sh mainly from other coutries than the US?
