How I got my iPhone to work with Rogers EDGE
I just got EDGE working on my iPhone with Rogers and decided I'd share my experience here so others may benefit.
I called Rogers and asked the sales rep for my data plan options, he started telling me it was $15 for 1.5MB, $30 for 5MB, etc. I referred him to this page on their website ...
http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wire...e-internet.asp
I asked what the difference was between the $10 for 10MB mobile internet plan on that page, and the plans he was originally referring me to that cost way more. He didn't have an answer. I specifically asked if it would allow me to go to any site on the net, check my email, etc. I did not want to be confined to some Rogers version of the internet that only allowed me to go to sites through their WAP portal. Is that why this plan was so much cheaper I asked? After being put on hold a few times he said that plan would indeed allow me to go anywhere and do anything on the net.
I had him add the plan to my account, then I turned off/on my iPhone while I was still on the line with him. It didn't work, I had already changed my edge settings to what another Rogers iPhone user had previously posted so that shouldn't have been the problem.
He transferred me to tech support where I was connected to a smart and knowledgable tech, no seriously.
After a short discussion about how I actually had an iPhone working on his network we tried to diagnose my EDGE connection problem. First I asked him what should my EDGE settings be set to in my iPhone's settings, he said change them to:
APN: internet.com
user: wapuser1
pass: wap
This was different from what another Rogers iPhone user had posted earlier. So I changed them and tried again, still no go. He checked my account and said the rep didn't correctly activate my account so that I would be able to surf outside of Rogers portal. He changed a setting or two, asked me to reboot the phone and try again. It worked!
I was now a little suspicious that the $10 plan I signed up for wasn't going to cover this internet use outside of Rogers site so I asked him the same questions I asked the sales rep. He said my plan should indeed cover up to 10MB of EDGE usage doing anything on the net, but recommended I don't go over cause "Data is really expensive in Canada". Really?
I'll be watching my EDGE data usage like a hawk, I checked my IMAP email account once through EDGE and it resulted in 3.0Kb sent, 5.0Kb received.
As for the rest of the iPhone/Rogers experience, everything seems to work seamlessly. It connects me to my voicemail when I press the voicemail button, it shows the little red voicemail dot over the phone icon when I have voicemail waiting, text messages also work fine.
EDIT:
As applerob mentions later in this thread, be very careful not to go over the 10MB limit. Overage charges for the plan are extreme compared to some other plans.
The overage rate for the $10 - 10MB Navigate plan is $30/MB and there is no option for a bigger "Navigate" plan right now.

$12 for 1MB, $25 for 3MB, $40 for 7MB

How did you manage to get voicemail working? Rogers does not offer any Visual Voicemail. Does your phone simply dial the Rogers voicemail number when you hit the voicemail button? How does it know that you have new messages without using visual voicemail?

Does this promotion exist within fido??

Not visual voicemail, just regular voicemail. With all the visual voicemail features in the iPhone and the fact that every AT&T plan supports it, I was worried that my plain old voicemail wouldn't work with my iPhone.
Obviously I could always dial it manually, but I was hoping I'd just be able to press the voicemail button from the phone screen, and also be able to get the usual voicemail indicator when I received one. It all works great.

So how did you find this mobile package?? The rates the customer rep quoted you on are regular prices for both rogers and fifo. I'm just trying to see if FIDO has a similar plan.

- Go to their home page, then in the left navigation column click on ...
- Wireless
- Plans and Essentials
- In the middle of the page look under the Wireless Essentials column, click on navigate Mobile Internet Plans
Sorry, no idea about what FIDO offers.

hey fatskank ... i can't find this answer anywhere, but i was wondering when you're not close to a wifi source, how the maps function works. Does it run off of EDGE or are the maps downloaded into the phone. Just wondering if you needed directions on the run how much that would bite into your 10MB allotment. Any response will be greatly appreciated.

I've used maps on my iphone on wifi. If you input your destination (while using wifi - at your house or something) and then leave a wifi connection it seems to save all the info in the phone.
