I got rid of mine by calling my provide and putting a bar on data including GPRS and mms . Now I get no msgs and there is no e in the top bar. I also don't get the large bill. Its heaps better if you just want to use wifi. Edge is to slow anyway. Good luck.

Hey all - Im very new to the iPhone as my boss just got me one from overseas. Its hacked and working on Telstra - this thread caught my eye as my phone shows the E symbol at the top of the screen as meantioned above - when I try and enter into weather, maps, you tube etc it says "you are not subscribed to EDGE blah blah" - my fear is that I am going to get a massive phone bill or something? I have taken my SIM card out and put it back in my old phone until i find more information. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Tnx.

few.... thanks for that!!! I was waiting for a huge bill to roll in there for a while. Can anyone tell me - can you actually get the Maps & Weather working on the iPhone in Australia? Will these ever be available here? Sorry for all the questions; its just so hard to find specific information on it. tnx.

P.S Please direct me if there is somewhere I can find the answers to all these newbie questions.

It will work just fine if you are on a wifi network. If you get edge service on your iphone with Telstra ( or whoever) then it will work that way too...

There is no problem regarding Maps or Weather. If you are near a Wifi connection and can get access - they will work. In Weather click the "i" button (lower right corner) and add the cities you want. I travel a lot and have about 12 world cities I frequently visit, stored in there. Anywhere I have wifi access - they update and give me the 6 day forecast.

Maps should work fine under the same principal. The only difference is that since Apple aren't officially launching it in the Aus, you won't be be able to do the driving directions or the traffic data but the streets/suburban areas etc are still labelled. Will it be available? yes.. when they mention Australia for launching the iPhone .. but I wouldn't hold your breath just yet!

Also if you have EDGE through your phone package, then you can check these on the go too, but as you said - it might be expensive.
