[HOW TO] FREE, EASY 3.1.2 Tethering Tutorial
I just threw together a quick tutorial for enabling tethering using MuscleNerd's elegant patches. Lots of pictures to help you out and can be done entirely on the iPhone in about 3 minutes using nothing but Cyida and Safari. Check it out here:

3.1.2 iPhone Tethering Tutorial This tethering hack works great on my offical AT&T iPhone 3G with one exception, when you install the tethering hack for some reason I loss my voice mail function on my iphone. Thought it was strange that I hadn't recieved any voice mail for the past week, so I started thinking the only thing I did different to the iPhone was use the tethering hack after jailbreaking the 3.1.2 firmware. So I un-installed the tethering hack and I got my voice mail back. Did this 6 times and the same thing happens, I install the tethering hack and voice mail is gone, un-install tethering hack and voice mail is back.
I guess the tethering hack for the 3.1.2 firmware needs a little more work.
Thanks, Jeff
Now the iPhone 4
The ulitmate iPhone...... :-)

You are indeed correct; the current method that works and lets you keep visual voicemail is like this:

How to enable tethering on 3.1.2 AND keep VVM working!!!
If you would like to tether again on 3.1.2, finally there is a hack via a CommCenter patch. Early adopters were reporting issues with VVM... Well for AT&T users, I have found a workaround.
Here is what you do:
1. Apply the CommCenter patch (files from @MuscleNerd, tutorial from iClarified)
2. Install AT&T 6.0 ipcc by StealthBravo (
file here,
how to enable carrier testing in iTunes 8.2 or 9.x)
3. Reboot
4. Install the BenM Mobile Config for AT&T via Mobile Safari at help.BenM.at
5. Respring
6. Remove the BenM profile for AT&T
7. Respring
Updating my tutorial with this information; hopefully someone will work out a better solution at some point and figure out exactly what is going on.

If you followed my first tutorial, and Visual Voicemail isn't working for you, do this:
1) Follow step 14 in the current tutorial and remove the MobileConfiguration file
2) Follow the instructions in the new tutorial starting with step 4.
Hope that helps!

The reason for the glitches and the extra steps with mobileconfig are wrong type-mask settings in the "stealth" carrier bundle (ipcc). They dont fit. I can't test different settings cause I am not on AT&T.
The wrong type-masks are overwritten by the mobileconfig file so you can edit it. On the other hand the mobileconfig file only sets type-mask to -2, a setting we used in the early days. This only sets all values to one apn.
Once we have done some more testing the way to go will be to add the dev team's CommCenter patch and apply the correct ipcc - done.
Mobileconfig in my oppinion is not the way to go, even though you get it working here ;-)
If you are on a non Apple partner carrier, it's way easier. Cause those dont have VVM the settings are pretty straight forward. I do run a webservice for that, it creates your private carrier bundle in ipcc format.
http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/78031.htm
BUT: This is only for those NOT on a Apple partner carrier. After creating/downloading the ipcc you have to "fix" CommCenter, apply the ipcc - reboot, done.
just my 2 cent
