Default How do you know if GPRS/Edge is on or off?

Here in Australia on Vodafone you get charged by the time you're on data ... not necessarily the amount you download.

    So, my question is:

If I download email on the iPhone - it doesn't say it's starting anything to do with GPRS (we don't have edge on this network here) but it downloads the mail.
Does it then turn off GPRS?? Is there a way to tell?

    O

It's the same here in Thailand - we get charged for time connected + data transfer. I'd also like to know how to monitor these connections. Here we use EDGE but it's the same principle.

At present to ensure that I'm not blowing my money I manually set the APN each time - in fact I just delete the last digit (to make invalid APN) and then re-add it when I need to use EDGE.

One strange observation is that even with an invalid APN it still displays the E for Edge symbol, although obviously won't connect but I don't get an error until I actually try to use the connection. So having E (Edge) or G (GRPS) displayed doesn't necessarily mean your using it, I guess??

Someone in another post mentioned that the connection is active & being used when the E (or G in your case) goes blue. I don't believe this to be true because I can fire up safari with an invalid APN set and it will go blue with no valid connection. It only fires back an EDGE error when I try to go to a page.

I think we could do with someone whipping up a GPRS/EDGE monitor app - something similar to SBPs GPRS Monitor that I used on WM6.
