Default how to disable auto update in itunes

i have a jailbroken iphone, everything i sync with itunes it asks if i want to update to the current version 2.2.1.

i want to disable this in case one day i accidentally press 'update' and get to a version that will lock my iphone.

i have itunes 8 and i go to itunes->preferences->general-> then de-select 'check for new software updates automatically', but it still ask me when i re-lauch itunes.

am i missing something here? how do i disable this so i will not see that update window and update by accident?

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).
